Darmstadt as a student city: young, digital, vegan and LGBTQ+-friendly

Is Darmstadt a student city? Yes: in the 2025/26 winter semester, around 39,000 people were enrolled at the TU Darmstadt, Hochschule Darmstadt (University of Applied Sciences), the Evangelische Hochschule (Protestant University of Applied Sciences) and the Akademie für Tonkunst (music academy) – in a city of 170,263 residents. You can feel student life everywhere: in busy cafés in the morning, on the lawns of the Herrngarten and in the vaulted cellar beneath the palace at night.
Yet student-city Darmstadt is not just a playground for twenty-somethings. Science, digital projects, vegan food, a visible queer scene and street art sit side by side with the Staatstheater (state theatre), Art Nouveau and puppet theatre for adults. This guide shows where to experience that vibe – and why our studios by the Orangerie in Bessungen make a relaxed base for it.
What is Darmstadt known for? The city in five facts
Ask about Darmstadt and two words usually come up: science and Art Nouveau. Five facts show what makes the city tick:
- City of Science since 1997: Darmstadt has held the honorary title „Wissenschaftsstadt“ (City of Science) since August 1997 – according to the city, the first in Germany at the time. More than 30 scientific institutions are based here, including ESA/ESOC, EUMETSAT and the GSI Helmholtz Centre, where element 110 was discovered: darmstadtium.
- Around 39,000 students: 23,926 at the TU, 13,816 at h_da, 1,248 at the Evangelische Hochschule and 97 at the Akademie für Tonkunst (winter semester 2025/26).
- 170,263 residents: That is how many people lived in Darmstadt on 31 July 2026, 26.2 percent of them with a foreign passport.
- Digital city: In 2017 Darmstadt won the Bitkom „Digitale Stadt“ (Digital City) competition; free municipal Wi-Fi has been available since 2016.
- UNESCO World Heritage: The Art Nouveau artists’ colony on the Mathildenhöhe has been on the World Heritage List since 2021.
And the nickname? Locals are colloquially known as „Heiner“ – which is where the Heinerfest, the city festival in July, gets its name.
Student city Darmstadt: how do the TU and h_da shape student life?
TU Darmstadt, founded in 1877, is the city’s largest university: 114 degree programmes, and according to the university 28 percent of its students earned their school-leaving qualification abroad. Hochschule Darmstadt, with its high-rise on Schöfferstraße, maintains partnerships with 186 universities in 55 countries. Accordingly, lecture halls, canteens and cafés sound very international.
The semester sets the rhythm, and you really notice it in early October. At the Schlosskeller, the TU student union’s (AStA) club in the vaults of the Residenzschloss since 1966, there is a freshers’ party on 8 October 2026 and the semester opening party on 9 October. Drinks and food there are deliberately priced for student budgets. 806qm at the city-centre campus, also an AStA project, combines a café, club and event spaces. More addresses for long nights are collected in our guide to Darmstadt nightlife.
During the day, many head to the Herrngarten, Darmstadt’s largest and oldest park, open to the public since 1801: wide lawns, a pond with the city’s biggest fountain and summer concerts at the bandstand. To the north-east begins the Martinsviertel, once a farming settlement outside the city wall and today a neighbourhood of half-timbered houses, shops and pubs around Riegerplatz and Heinheimer Straße. The TU’s student ambassadors promise more than ten pubs and cafés within a ten-minute walk in the „Kneipenviereck“ (pub quarter).
Prospective students and parents should check the university calendar: h_da hosts INNODAY26 at the darmstadtium on 29 October 2026 and invites visitors to its Research Day on 11 November 2026. If you first want to settle in for the start of your studies or an internship, we offer furnished studios for longer stays from 28 nights.

Digital city and science: modern without big-city stress
Darmstadt is often modern where you don’t immediately see it. Since winning the Bitkom competition in 2017, Digitalstadt Darmstadt GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of the city, has been running its digital projects: a city-wide radio network for the Internet of Things, a data platform with sensor data on traffic and air quality, for example, and the free „WiFi Darmstadt“ network, available at Luisenplatz, Friedensplatz and Marktplatz, among other places.
Here you can also listen to research. At the Centralstation, Darmstadt’s first power station from 1888, the series „Wissenschaft im Rampenlicht“ (Science in the Spotlight) brings researchers on stage; the Science Slam on 24 October 2026 is already listed as sold out (as of Oct 2026), and further evenings are announced until March 2027. What lies behind space mission control, weather satellites and particle accelerators is explained in our article on Darmstadt, City of Science.
And the big-city stress? It’s limited. According to the HEAG timetable, tram 3 runs from the Orangerie stop in Bessungen to the Schloss (palace) – and thus the city-centre campus – in seven minutes, and to Luisenplatz in ten. If you work remotely in between, Studio 3 has a desk by the window with a view of the greenery – Wi-Fi included.

Vegan food in Darmstadt: from raw cake around the corner to an organic brunch
There is no official vegan ranking for Darmstadt – but the choice speaks for itself. OpenStreetMap lists more than 140 places with vegan options within the city limits (as of Oct 2026): cafés, ramen, Thai, Syrian and Ethiopian cuisine, ice-cream parlours and even the Mensa Stadtmitte (city-centre canteen).
The shortest route leads to Bessunger Niederstraße, just around the corner from our studios. There, plantyful, a fully vegan takeaway, sells raw cakes, soups and bowls – Tuesday to Thursday from 12:00 to 14:00 (as of Oct 2026); you can pre-order by phone in the morning between 10:00 and 11:00. Take your bowl back to the studio, to the large wooden table in Studio 4 with its long kitchenette – a lunch break just like at home.
In the city centre, Mondo Daily on Grafenstraße offers more than 50 vegan dishes ranging from Mediterranean to Middle Eastern and Asian, plus a few regional meat dishes. Timm’s Café in the Johannesviertel roasts its own coffee and is explicitly dedicated to vegan cake. More roasters are featured in our guide to specialty coffee in Darmstadt.
For a long weekend brunch, head to the Alnatura Campus in the west of the city: the TressBrüder Vegi BIO-Restaurant serves a vegetarian organic buffet on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 10:00 to 14:30 for €39.90 (as of Oct 2026). In the south, in Eberstadt, Radieschen cooks vegetarian and vegan food, at lunchtime and in the evening.
Queer Darmstadt: LGBTQ+ centre, parties and Pride (CSD) 2027
How queer is Darmstadt? One address sums it up: the Oetinger Villa on Kranichsteiner Straße. There, the association vielbunt, founded in 2010 and by its own account one of the largest queer organisations in Hesse, runs the Queer Centre Darmstadt. Every second Friday of the month it turns into the QUEERBAR from 22:00 – on 9 October 2026 it celebrates its seventh anniversary. There is also a regulars’ meet-up, sports groups and a Sunday brunch for the over-49s.
The nightlife is colourful too: the Schlosskeller hosts its own queer party, „SCHRILL + LAUT“, which celebrates its 15th anniversary on Friday, 16 October 2026.
The highlight of the year is CSD Darmstadt (Christopher Street Day, Germany’s name for Pride), held since 2011 and organised by vielbunt. In 2026 it took place on 15 August, with a march, a stage programme on Karolinenplatz and an after-show at the Centralstation. The city itself joined with its own walking group, and rainbow flags hung in front of the town hall. According to the organisers, CSD Darmstadt 2027 is announced for Saturday, 21 August 2027, from 12:00 on Karolinenplatz. If you are travelling for it, book the weekend early – for example in our studios in Bessungen, from two nights and with self check-in.
Urban and creative: street art, clubs and Heiner humour
The city’s largest canvas is in the south of Bessungen: the Lincoln Wall, a noise barrier almost 700 metres long along the B3 road, is Hesse’s largest legal graffiti wall according to Darmstadt Marketing – with well over 100 works on what was once grey concrete. A walk for anyone looking for photo subjects beyond Art Nouveau.
The second open-air gallery awaits in the north: at the Street Art Gallery Rhönring, the garages of a housing estate overlooking Hundertwasser’s Waldspirale have been painted, many with motifs of well-known Darmstadt places. The renovation won the Hessian Heritage Conservation Prize in 2020.
In the evening, the city splits up pleasantly. Students dance at the Schlosskeller or 806qm, while the crowd mixes at concerts, readings and parties at the Centralstation. If you prefer the classics, go to the Staatstheater for opera, drama, dance and concerts; students get a discount. And then there’s the local Heiner humour: since 1996 the Kikeriki Theater has been playing in the Comedy Hall, the former Bessungen gymnasium – according to Darmstadt Marketing the most successful puppet theatre for adults in Germany, with more than 1.45 million visitors. Like our studios, it is in Bessungen, so the walk home after the show is short.
