Short break in Darmstadt: your weekend by the Orangerie

A weekend in Darmstadt is well worth it: Art Nouveau on the Mathildenhöhe, baroque gardens, a lively State Theatre and the cafés of Bessungen. For your city break you stay in one of our seven studios at Jahnstraße 1 – approx. 100 metres from the tram and approx. 300 metres from the Orangerie garden. Here you book your Darmstadt weekend directly with the host.

Why Darmstadt for a short break?

Darmstadt holds the official title “City of Science” and is compact enough to see a lot in two or three days. The Mathildenhöhe artists' colony with its Wedding Tower (Hochzeitsturm) has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2021. Add to that parks such as the Herrngarten and the Orangerie, the Staatstheater and the city centre around Luisenplatz with its palace and shopping streets.

Darmstadt is also a relaxed base for a city break in the Rhine-Main region: from the main station there are good connections to Frankfurt, Mannheim and Heidelberg.

A weekend in Darmstadt – a suggested plan

  • Friday: Arrive between 15:00 and 20:00, enter your access code and settle in. For dinner, head to one of the restaurants in Bessungen – there is plenty of choice nearby.
  • Saturday: Take the tram from the Orangerie stop into the city centre, stroll across Luisenplatz (approx. 1.5 km as the crow flies), then walk up to the Mathildenhöhe (approx. 2.3 km). In the evening, perhaps catch a performance at the Staatstheater, approx. 1.0 km away.
  • Sunday: Breakfast in your own kitchenette or at the bakery on the street that guests recommend in their reviews. Then a walk through the Orangerie garden (approx. 300 m) and check-out by 11:00. By arrangement, you can leave your luggage for a while afterwards.

Bessungen: the neighbourhood around the Orangerie

Bessungen lies south of the city centre and combines city life with plenty of green space. The Orangerie garden is a baroque park that invites you to stroll and unwind – ideal for a slow morning. Around the Orangerie tram stop you will find cafés, restaurants and an ice-cream café that one guest mentioned in their review.

Football fans don't have far to go either: the Merck-Stadion am Böllenfalltor (home of SV Darmstadt 98) is approx. 1.5 km away as the crow flies. Many places in Bessungen and the city centre are easy to reach on foot or by bike.
