You’ll find specialty coffee in Darmstadt at buna in Bessungen, at Timm’s Café in the Johannesviertel and at Woodrich in the Wilhelminenstraße pedestrian zone – these are the three cafés named in European Coffee Trip’s Darmstadt guide. For freshly roasted coffee beans to take home, go to aniko Coffee Roasters, a roastery with a shop and coffee school on Bessunger Straße.

The best part: buna and aniko are in Bessungen, within walking distance of our studios by the Orangerie, and you can reach the city-centre spots by tram without changing. This guide shows what makes each place special, when it’s open and how to turn them into a coffee route for one morning, from your first cappuccino to a bag of beans for the kitchenette.

Specialty coffee in Darmstadt: which cafés does European Coffee Trip recommend?

The European Coffee Trip platform features specialty cafés and roasteries in its city guides. The Darmstadt guide lists three cafés: buna, Timm’s Café and Woodrich Coffee Lab. aniko is also listed among the roasteries. Since lists like these change, it’s worth checking European Coffee Trip’s Darmstadt page before your trip.

What makes specialty coffee special? The bean’s journey can be traced from the farm to the cup: hand-picked cherries, careful roasting, precise brewing. You can taste it even without sugar – sometimes fruity and bright, sometimes chocolatey and round.

  • buna – fine coffee, Heidelberger Straße 72: neighbourhood café in Bessungen with home-baked pastries
  • Timm’s Café, Landwehrstraße 13: its own roast and vegan cakes
  • Woodrich Coffee Lab, Wilhelminenstraße: coffee bar in the pedestrian zone – check the address before visiting (details below)
  • aniko Coffee Roasters, Bessunger Straße 53: roastery for espresso and filter beans, with a shop and coffee school

We’ve deliberately not made a ranking: where to find the best coffee in Darmstadt is for your palate to decide. The four differ mainly in style, from a breakfast café to a roastery with courses.

buna Darmstadt: cappuccino and pastéis de nata in Bessungen

Tuesday, half past eight: the grinder rattles, the steam wand of the La Marzocco hisses, and the first pastéis de nata are on the counter. buna sees itself as a neighbourhood café for Bessungen. The name comes from Amharic, the most widely spoken language in Ethiopia, and simply means coffee.

What goes into your cup is carefully prepared specialty coffee, also available as decaf. For cappuccino and the like, you can choose between fresh whole milk from Weidenhof and Oatly oat drink, and there’s also matcha and chai latte. The team bakes fresh every day: pastéis de nata, fluffy kanelbullar (Swedish cinnamon buns), hearty open sandwiches and seasonal pastries. The flour and eggs are certified organic and come from the region, from the Herrnmühle mill in Reichelsheim and from Nieder-Ramstadt.

Handy for your stay: all the coffees served in the café are also available as beans to take away. If you haven’t brought a grinder, buna will grind them on the spot to suit your brewing method. That way, specialty coffee is ready in the kitchenette of your studio the next morning. If you want to go deeper, book the barista workshop: 2.5 to 3 hours at the espresso machine, for 2 to 4 people, €95 per person. Dates are available on request by phone or email.

  • buna opening hours (as of Oct 2026): Mon 10:00–17:30, Tue–Fri 8:30–17:30, Sat 10:00–17:30, closed on Sundays
  • Good to know: card payment only, no reservations
  • Getting there: on foot from the studios through Bessungen; the “Bessunger Straße” tram stop is a few metres from the café

Timm’s Café: Darmstadt-roasted coffee and vegan cakes

In the Johannesviertel, a few steps from Willy-Brandt-Platz, Timm’s Café combines two passions: specialty coffee and sweet treats, home-baked and entirely vegan. Since April 2023 the team has been roasting its own coffee under the name Cobble, right here in Darmstadt. The roasters value transparent trade, in which the costs and journey of every coffee can be traced. The house bean is roasted specially for the café by Kaffeekommune from Mainz, alongside rotating guest roasters.

An honest note for remote workers: on its website the café asks guests not to open laptops and tablets, and it doesn’t take reservations. Timm’s is a place to switch off, with a cake fork instead of a keyboard. Work comes afterwards, at the desk in your studio, with Wi-Fi and a bag of beans from the café.

For the coffee-curious, Timm’s runs workshops. The barista workshop lasts around 2.5 hours, costs €119 per person and is limited to six participants. Next date according to the booking page: Tuesday, 17 November 2026, 15:30. There is also a latte art workshop for €99, whose November date is already fully booked according to the booking page.

  • Opening hours (as of Oct 2026): according to the homepage Mon–Fri 7:30–17:00 (different on workshop days), Sat–Sun 9:00–17:00. The café subpage gives different times, for example only until 15:00 on Tuesdays. Please check before your visit; the café itself refers to Google and Instagram for this.
  • Getting there: tram 3 from “Orangerie” to “Willy-Brandt-Platz”, 12 minutes according to the HEAG timetable, then a few minutes on foot

Woodrich on Wilhelminenstraße: a coffee bar in the heart of Darmstadt’s pedestrian zone

The third tip from the guide is Woodrich Coffee Lab on Wilhelminenstraße, a pedestrian street a few minutes’ walk from Luisenplatz. According to its European Coffee Trip listing, you can get espresso and filter coffee there, plus cold brew and nitro – cold-brewed coffee dispensed with nitrogen, which gives it a velvety, creamy texture. Decaf and plant-based milk are available too, and in good weather you can sit outside amid the bustle of the city centre.

Address and opening hours: please check before your visit. European Coffee Trip lists the Coffee Lab at house number 4. OpenStreetMap now shows a pizzeria there, and a few doors down, at Wilhelminenstraße 10, a café called “Woodrich Coffee, Brunch & Stories” has been listed since September 2025 (according to OpenStreetMap Mon–Sat 9:00–21:00, Sun 10:00–21:00). Whether the Coffee Lab has moved there is not officially confirmed, and we couldn’t find a website of its own. The quickest way to find out is to check the Instagram accounts of Woodrich Coffee Lab and Woodrich Brunch & Stories.

The Woodrich Café just round the corner at Elisabethenstraße 17 has reliably documented hours. It isn’t in the guide, but it’s a relaxed all-rounder for young and old: barista coffee from a specially developed roast, homemade cake, fusion cuisine and a stage for art from the region. According to Darmstadt Tourismus, it is open Mon–Sat 8:30–20:00 and Sun 10:30–20:00 (as of Oct 2026). If you fancy a stroll afterwards, you’ll find ideas in our shopping guide to Darmstadt.

  • Getting there: tram 3 or 7 from “Orangerie” to “Luisenplatz”, 10 minutes according to the HEAG timetable, then a few minutes on foot. Monday to Friday, a tram runs towards the city centre roughly every ten minutes during the day; line 7 only runs Monday to Friday, so at the weekend take the 3.

aniko Coffee Roasters: a coffee roastery in Darmstadt-Bessungen with shop and coffee school

Just a few steps from the Orangerie stop is the third-wave roastery aniko Coffee Roasters. It roasts only hand-picked green coffee from Africa, Asia and South and Central America. For each variety, the shop lists the suitable brewing methods, from espresso machine to pour-over. There is also decaf, a reduced-caffeine blend and seasonal roasts, packed in aluminium-free bags. On top of that come grinders, scales and brewers from brands such as Comandante, Hario and Acaia.

So that your beans don’t stay in your suitcase on holiday: the kitchenette in your studio has a kettle and a coffee machine – Studio 5, for example, has a pod machine. For freshly roasted beans, the kettle is the better choice. With a pour-over dripper or reusable filter, like the ones aniko sells among its accessories, you can brew your own filter coffee in the morning. In Studio 5, you drink it at the kitchen counter with bar stools by the window, looking out onto greenery.

The coffee school is a good reason for a coffee weekend in Darmstadt. In the home barista course, two trainers look after the group at several espresso machines. It lasts about three hours, costs €119 and includes 250 grams of specialty coffee to take home. According to the shop, the next available date is Saturday, 14 November 2026, at 15:00. For latte art there is a course on Monday, 19 October 2026, at 17:30 for €99, for which you should already have some experience with an espresso machine. A course on Saturday, two nights in a studio: our page about a short break in Darmstadt shows what that looks like as a mini-trip.

  • Shop hours: please check before your visit. The website doesn’t give fixed times. Items ordered online can be collected in the shop on Tuesdays or Thursdays.
  • Money-saving tip: according to the website, 1 kg bags come with a 10 per cent discount.
