Darmstadt nightlife: bars, clubs and pubs – from brunch to the last tram

Darmstadt's nightlife centres on three areas: the Martinsviertel with its "Kneipenviereck" (pub quarter); the city centre around the palace and Marktplatz with Goldene Krone, Schlosskeller, Ratskeller and Centralstation; and Bessungen, where Café LINIE 3 stays open until midnight and the Knabenschule and the jazz cellar host live music. On top of that, there are student clubs such as 806qm, two brewpubs with their own beer, and small cabaret stages for anyone who'd rather laugh than dance.
This tour follows a whole day: from a café au lait in the neighbourhood and Sunday brunch to the last tram. Many of these evenings begin or end in Bessungen – right by our studios at the Orangerie.
Breakfast in Darmstadt: where to start the day at a relaxed pace in Bessungen
The best way to start the day in Bessungen is without an alarm clock. Café LINIE 3 on Ludwigshöhstraße serves breakfast until late at night: daily from 08:00 to 24:00, from 09:00 on Sundays and public holidays. The café au lait comes with extra foam in a French bowl, alongside croissants or muesli. The café is named after the tram line that runs right through Bessungen. In the evening, cider (Apfelwein) from the Odenwald is on the table.
Opposite the Freiberger Platz stop you'll find Café Godot, a Bessungen institution since February 1983. In the morning there's breakfast and home-made baked goods, from 11:30 to 14:00 a changing lunch menu, and after work wine, beer and cocktails at the bar. Coffee nerds head to buna and the aniko roastery – more on those in our guide to specialty coffee in Darmstadt. Or have a leisurely breakfast in your studio: in Studio 4, the long kitchenette runs right along the window, next to a large wooden table.
Sunday brunch and cake like grandma used to make: the classics
For Sunday brunch, it's worth heading to the Martinsviertel. On Riegerplatz, Nina and Imke have run 3klang – café, restaurant and bar in one – since 2003. On Sundays and public holidays, a breakfast buffet is laid out from 09:00 to 15:00: hot and cold, sweet and savoury, much of it vegan. It costs €21.60; children aged 6 to 12 pay €11.60, younger children eat free. Reservations are taken for two time slots (09:30 to 11:30 or 11:30 to 15:00), and according to 3klang the buffet books up quickly.
For cake like your grandmother used to bake, go to Café & Konditorei Gretchen on Spessartring, on the edge of the Martinsviertel. Baker Armin Blinkle carries on the tradition of the former Konditorei Faust here and bakes in his own bakehouse directly behind the café. It's open Wednesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00, with breakfast at weekends. In the city centre, Woodrich Café on Elisabethenstraße combines barista coffee, home-made cake and fusion cooking, with works by local artists on the walls.
Pubs, bars and cider: why the Martinsviertel is Darmstadt's nightlife district
The Martinsviertel, known locally as the "Watzeviertel", is where many students go out: half-timbered houses saved by a citizens' initiative, and pubs on almost every corner. TU Darmstadt's student ambassadors call it the "magic pub quarter". Walk along Heinheimer-, Dieburger-, Mauer- and Lauteschlägerstraße and within ten minutes you'll pass more than ten pubs and cafés. On the table: typical Hessian drinks, above all Apfelwein (cider), served the classic way in a "Gerippter", the glass with the diamond pattern. Our tip: don't plan a fixed route – just stay wherever the laughter inside is loudest.
If you'd rather ease into the evening, sit down at 3klang on Riegerplatz, open until midnight Thursday to Saturday. Once a year the whole neighbourhood celebrates: on the second weekend in September, the Martinskerb street festival takes place, with the "Watzemussiggnacht" on Saturday, a music night in the pubs. Read more about the young scene in our article on Darmstadt as a student city.

Darmstadt nightlife: clubs, concerts and parties from Centralstation to Goldene Krone
Centralstation in the Carree was Darmstadt's first power station in 1888; today it's a cultural centre for concerts, comedy and parties. Its second-floor bar opens from September to May, Wednesday to Saturday from 19:00, with free entry unless stated otherwise. The October 2026 programme includes Tristan Brusch (7 October) and Lizz Wright (28 October), plus "Fifty/Fifty" on 9 October: a party for the over-50s crowd with 80s and 90s dance and Italo disco.
Not far from the palace, on Schustergasse, stands the Goldene Krone, a building with more than 350 years of history and a music pub since 1975. The TU ambassadors call it "the institution" of Darmstadt nightlife. The Krone includes a pub, a disco, the club "Rocky" and a hall: Tuesdays are jazz nights, Thursdays bring a table football tournament, there's an 80s Night on 10 October and Halloween parties at the end of October.
In the vaulted cellar of the Residenzschloss (the former royal palace), students have been partying since 1966 at the Schlosskeller, run by the TU's student union (AStA), with prices for student budgets. In October 2026, the line-up includes the semester opening party (9 October), the queer party "SCHRILL + LAUT" with a 15th-anniversary special (16 October) and the Kellerslam (21 October). On the Stadtmitte campus, 806qm is a university café by day and turns into a techno and house club on some nights, for example on 16 October with heineraudio. Afterwards, there's no hotel bar waiting – just your studio: under the rain shower in Studio 6, the club night soon washes off.
Beer with a history: brewpub, brewhouse and beer gardens
On Marktplatz, in the Old Town Hall dating from 1598, the Darmstädter Ratskeller has brewed its own beer since 1989 – by its own account, the city's only brewpub. In the brewing room you can watch the brewing process. On tap are Helles (pale lager), Dunkles (dark lager) and Hefeweizen (wheat beer), unfiltered and straight from the storage tanks, plus a seasonal Christmas bock.
The Grohe Brauhaus on Nieder-Ramstädter Straße stands on a site where, according to the owners, beer has been brewed for around 170 years. Alongside "Grohe Hell" and four other beer styles, you'll find Grie Soß (Frankfurt-style green sauce), pork knuckle and other Hessian dishes, daily from 11:00.
In Darmstadt, beer gardens are a seasonal affair. The Schlossgarten on the palace bastion, run by students, opens daily from 13:00 in good weather from April to September – so the spritz under the hornbeams will have to wait until spring. The Bayerischer Biergarten on Kastanienallee is also on its winter break, though its restaurant "Zum Scheinheilgen" stays open. The Ratskeller's website lists its beer garden as open daily from 10:00 to 23:00; in autumn weather, it's worth calling ahead.
Staying in Bessungen for the evening: jazz, cabaret and dinner within walking distance
You don't need to go into the city centre for a good night out. Beneath the Jazzinstitut in the Baroque Bessunger Kavaliershaus, built in the early 18th century, lies a vaulted cellar – Darmstadt's jazz cellar. According to the institute, it houses Europe's largest public jazz collection; downstairs, bands usually play to a small audience on Fridays. On the last Friday of the month, the Förderverein Jazz (jazz society) hosts the Bessunger Jam Session there; the next one is on 30 October 2026 at 20:30 with Trio 75. According to the institute, the society's programme has won the federal APPLAUS award for independent venues five times, most recently in 2023.
The Bessunger Knabenschule, a school building from 1878 and a community arts centre since 1983, puts Americana, world music, rock and reggae on stage – on 10 October, for example, the Cláudia Sofia Trio with music from Cape Verde (€18, concessions €15). For laughs, head to the Kikeriki Theater: at the Comedy Hall on Heidelberger Straße, puppet theatre for adults has been running since 1996 – by its own account the most successful in Germany. The halbNeun Theater on Sandstraße has staged cabaret, satire and chanson since 1980, with room for up to 200 guests.
For dinner beforehand, try the OX team's brasserie l'oxalis in the Bessunger Jagdhof (Tue–Sat from 18:00). More on that in our guide to the Michelin star in Darmstadt. Fancy one more drink afterwards? Café Godot, opposite the Freiberger Platz stop, mixes cocktails in the evening. Whether it's the best cocktail bar in Darmstadt is something you'll have to find out for yourself. Then have your nightcap at the kitchen counter with bar stools in Studio 5.

Getting safely back to your studio: tram, night services and HeinerLiner
Tram 3 connects the Orangerie stop directly with the nightlife spots in the city centre, no changes needed. According to the HEAG timetable, it takes six minutes to Schulstraße, seven to Schloss (Goldene Krone, Schlosskeller, Ratskeller) and ten to Luisenplatz (Centralstation). On the way back, according to the timetable (valid since 14 December 2025), tram 3 still leaves Luisenplatz daily at 0:27, arriving at the Orangerie at 0:35. On Friday and Saturday nights there are additional night services; the last one reaches the Orangerie at 1:35. Timetables change, so check your connection in advance on the RMV journey planner.
Otherwise, there's the HeinerLiner, HEAG mobilo's ride-pooling service: small electric buses you book via the app or the RMV service hotline, anywhere in the city. It runs Monday to Thursday from 16:00 to 24:00, Friday from 16:00 to 05:00, Saturday from 09:00 to 05:00, and Sundays and public holidays from 09:00 to 01:00. Adults pay €5 (€4 with a public transport ticket), each additional person €2.
From LINIE 3, Godot, the Knabenschule, the Jazzinstitut and the Comedy Hall, you can simply walk home. There's no reception desk that closes at midnight: you check yourself in with an access code. Find out more about the neighbourhood in our guide to Bessungen and the Orangerie, and ideas for a whole weekend on our page about a short break in Darmstadt.
