Darmstadt has carried its honorary title of Wissenschaftsstadt (City of Science) since August 1997 – the first city in Germany to do so, awarded by the Hessian state government. The reason is still easy to see today: around 39,000 students at four universities, plus major research institutions such as GSI/FAIR, ESA’s space operations centre ESOC, EUMETSAT and the ATHENE cybersecurity centre.

If you are arriving as a visiting professor, postdoc or conference guest, what you need most is a short trip to campus, a quiet place to work and an evening that doesn’t end in a hotel corridor. From the BSG Living studios by the Orangerie in Darmstadt-Bessungen, tram 3 takes you to the Schloss stop in seven minutes according to the HEAG timetable, right into TU’s Campus Stadtmitte (city centre campus). Here you will find routes, dates for the 2026/27 winter semester and places where science is fun after hours too.

Darmstadt, City of Science: why the title – and who does research here?

The city sees the title as recognition of its tradition in education and science. Today it counts more than 30 scientific institutions, including four universities. For the 2025/26 winter semester, the Darmstädter Datenblatt (the city’s statistical fact sheet) lists a combined 39,087 students at TU Darmstadt, Hochschule Darmstadt, the Evangelische Hochschule (Protestant University of Applied Sciences) and the Akademie für Tonkunst (academy of music) – in a city of just over 170,000 inhabitants. If you do research here, you will soon come across one of these names:

  • TU Darmstadt: founded in 1877, with 24,437 students in the 2025/26 winter semester according to its own figures, 28 % of them international, and 114 degree programmes.
  • Hochschule Darmstadt (h_da): 13,816 students in the 2025/26 winter semester and, by its own account, 186 partner universities in 55 countries.
  • GSI Helmholtzzentrum and FAIR: in the north of the city, the FAIR accelerator facility is being built, with a superconducting ring accelerator 1,100 metres in circumference. Since GSI was founded in 1969, six new elements have been discovered there, including element 110, darmstadtium. The congress centre on the Schlossgraben bears the same name.
  • ESA ESOC and EUMETSAT: the European Space Agency’s space operations centre has been working in Darmstadt since 1967. EUMETSAT, the European organisation for weather satellites with 30 member states, has been based here since 1986.
  • ATHENE and Fraunhofer: Fraunhofer describes ATHENE as the largest research centre for cybersecurity and privacy protection in Europe. Partners include Fraunhofer SIT, Fraunhofer IGD (visual computing), TU and h_da.

For you as a guest, this means seminar room, lab and project partner are usually just a few tram stops apart. If your work takes you to Merck, Evonik or a Fraunhofer institute, you will find routes and accommodation tips in our guide to a business trip to Merck in Darmstadt.

TU Stadtmitte, Lichtwiese, h_da: how do you get from your studio to campus?

The Orangerie stop is a few minutes’ walk from the studios. From there, tram 3 runs into the city centre without changing, every 20 minutes during the day from Monday to Friday. In the morning it rolls past Bessungen’s period buildings, and after a few stops you are standing between the palace and the lecture hall.

Campus Stadtmitte

It takes seven minutes to the Schloss stop. From there, according to TU, the karo 5 entrance building on Karolinenplatz is a few minutes’ walk away. The darmstadtium, Fraunhofer IGD and the Residenzschloss (Residential Palace), where TU uses lecture halls, are also here. So you can safely leave the car behind when travelling to TU Darmstadt.

Campus Lichtwiese and Botanical Garden

For the Lichtwiese campus in the east, TU recommends bus L from Schloss or Luisenplatz to the terminus “TU Lichtwiese/Campus”. On the way it stops at TU’s Botanical Garden, home to around 8,000 plant species, with free admission. Between greenhouses and flower beds, a lunch break quickly turns into a little excursion. If you are coming straight from Frankfurt, the Odenwaldbahn RB 82 runs from Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof to Darmstadt TU-Lichtwiese station in about 25 minutes, according to TU.

Hochschule Darmstadt

Many h_da departments are located around the high-rise on Schöfferstraße, others on Adelungstraße and on the Mathildenhöhe; the media campus is in Dieburg. Check your best connection from the Orangerie in the RMV or HEAG mobilo journey planner before your appointment; the map below shows the straight-line distance and walking time from the studio.

GSI, ESOC and EUMETSAT

For ESOC, according to ESA, take tram 4 or 9 from Luisenplatz to “TZ Rhein Main” or “Maria-Goeppert-Straße”. Tram 3 gets you to Luisenplatz in ten minutes. GSI is in Wixhausen in the far north of the city: according to GSI, take tram 6, 7 or 8 from the city centre towards Arheilgen to the terminus “Dreieichweg” and change there to bus G. It runs Monday to Friday only.

Research stay or conference: what do you need for three nights or three weeks?

An appointment lecture, a review meeting, beam time at the accelerator: research trips rarely follow a hotel rhythm. So when it comes to accommodation near TU Darmstadt, the breakfast buffet matters less than the table where you can still analyse data in the evening.

  • Workspace and Wi-Fi: in Studio 3 the desk sits by the window with a view of greenery, Studio 5 has a separate desk, and Studio 4 a large wooden table with room for your laptop, printouts and coffee cup.
  • Kitchenette: hob, fridge, coffee machine with coffee, pots and crockery. On a three-week stay you can cook for yourself in the evening instead of eating out every day.
  • Self check-in: online check-in before arrival, then an access code and key box – handy when your flight lands late. If you arrive early or leave late, you can drop off your luggage by arrangement.
  • Longer stays: a washing machine and tumble dryer are available in the building for a fee, and cleaning can be arranged on request. From 28 nights, our long-stay terms in Darmstadt apply.

If you are a visiting researcher at TU Darmstadt, it pays to contact the university’s Welcome Centre early. It advises international professors, visiting researchers, postdocs and doctoral candidates and their families on preparation, arrival and everyday life in Darmstadt. You can book the studios direct online from two nights: see all seven studios by the Orangerie here.

Which conferences, summer schools and public lectures are coming up?

The following dates have been published for autumn and winter 2026/27 (as of 4 October 2026, subject to change):

  • TU public lecture series, from 14 October: under “Öffentliche Vorlesungsreihen” (public lecture series), TU lists, among others, “Sichere Kritische Infrastrukturen” (secure critical infrastructures; Wednesdays 16:15, Altes Hauptgebäude, also via Zoom) and “System Erde-Mensch” (the Earth–human system; Thursdays 18:05 from 15 October). The Evenari lecture series “Antisemitismus – Nationalismus – Zionismus” starts on 26 October in the Residenzschloss. GSI and FAIR also invite you to their lecture series “Wissenschaft für Alle” (science for everyone), according to GSI on Wednesdays at 14:00 on 21 October, 18 November and 9 December. Register to attend in the lecture hall; the parallel webinar is open without registration.
  • INNODAY 2026, 29 October: according to the university, h_da’s innovation day at the darmstadtium brings together more than 100 exhibitors, keynotes and a start-up pitch corner. How best to reach the congress centre is explained in our guide to conferences at the darmstadtium.
  • h_da Research Day, 11 November: at the university’s Haus der Forschung (House of Research). In 2026 the focus is on putting research results to use.
  • Darmstädter Ferienkurse, 10–24 July 2027: the Internationales Musikinstitut Darmstadt holds its summer courses for new music every two years – festival, international summer academy and discourse platform in one. Two weeks is exactly the length of stay for which a studio with a kitchenette pays off.

Whether it is a conference or summer school in Darmstadt or a workshop at an institute: check the venue and time with the organiser and, if things start early, arrive the evening before – for example at one of the studios by the Orangerie, from where tram 3 runs to the Schloss stop without changing.

After the lab: science slam, observatory and films in the original language

After the lab, science carries on – just louder. At the Centralstation, the city’s first power station from 1888, the series “Wissenschaft im Rampenlicht” (science in the spotlight) is running. At the science slam on Saturday, 24 October 2026, at 19:30, researchers compete with short talks and the audience crowns the winner. According to the Centralstation the evening is sold out, but a few remaining tickets are available (as of 4 October 2026). The series continues, among others, on 30 October with Dominik Eulberg and on 11 November with Alice Hasters.

During the day, the SCIENCE POP-UP by GSI/FAIR in the pedestrian zone is worth a visit: hands-on stations on atomic nuclei, particle accelerators and cosmic processes, free admission, for the curious aged 5 to 95. GSI shows the real facility on free guided tours for ages 12 and up – more in our article on the GSI particle accelerator.

Clear skies? Then head up to the Volkssternwarte (public observatory) on the Ludwigshöhe above Bessungen. At “Sterne über Darmstadt” (stars over Darmstadt) on 7 November and 5 December 2026, each at 19:30, you look through the observatory’s telescopes. Registration is required, and observing only takes place when the sky is cloud-free. According to the observatory, it is about a 25-minute walk from the tram terminus Lichtenbergschule (line 3). Bring a torch, as the paths are unlit.

And on Mondays? According to Darmstadt Tourismus, that is mainly when the Programmkino Rex art-house cinema on Wilhelminenstraße shows a selection of its films in the original language with subtitles. Ideal if your German is still a work in progress.

For international guests: arriving via FRA, tours in English, everyday life with a kitchenette

From Frankfurt Airport, the easiest option is the AirLiner bus from Terminal 1, stop 11. It runs every 30 minutes during the day and takes about 30 minutes to Darmstadt Hauptbahnhof according to the timetable. There you change to tram 3, and 18 minutes later you are at the Orangerie. A single ticket costs €10.70 including the supplement. With a Deutschlandticket you only pay the €3.80 supplement; DB tickets are not valid (as of October 2026). All other ways to reach Darmstadt are in our guide to getting to Darmstadt.

At the weekend, Darmstadt’s UNESCO World Heritage Site awaits: the public guided tour of the Mathildenhöhe on Saturdays at 14:00 is bilingual, in German and English. It lasts 90 minutes and meets at the north entrance of the Museum Künstlerkolonie (Artists’ Colony Museum). Read more about the artists’ colony in our article on Art Nouveau in Darmstadt. Public tours at ESA and EUMETSAT are currently only in German. For groups, Darmstadt Marketing organises private tours on request, for example in English or French.

And everyday life? On Fridays from 14:00 to 18:00 the Bessungen weekly market takes place in the Orangerie car park (as of October 2026). Fresh vegetables, a loaf of bread and a piece of cheese are all you need for dinner in your own kitchenette. If you need an office atmosphere now and then, book a day ticket at COWO21 on Holzhofallee. Check availability for your research stay now.
