Michelin star in Darmstadt: OX, fine dining and gourmet spots in and around the city

Which restaurant in Darmstadt has a Michelin star?

In short: OX. In the MICHELIN Guide Germany 2026 it is the only restaurant in Darmstadt with a star – by Michelin's definition, "high quality cooking". Brothers David and Norman Rink opened OX in 2019. What makes an evening there special: the two of them work the stove and the dining room themselves, and if you like, they'll explain each plate right at your table. A gourmet restaurant without the stiffness – more like an evening with hosts who love their craft.

For regular service, the Guide lists the menus "Pure Taste" and the vegetarian "Oxalis". In summer you can sit on the terrace in the inner courtyard. The restaurants in the surrounding area further down don't hold a star in 2026: one has a Bib Gourmand, the others are recommended by the Guide – we state exactly which for each address.

OX pop-up in autumn 2026: how to get one of the 14 nights

Water damage in the building kept OX out of action for a long time; now the team is making its comeback as a pop-up: 14 nights with a six-course tasting menu in "15 impressions", fully vegetarian on request. It starts on Saturday, 10 October 2026. According to the website, the events run on Fridays and Saturdays from 18:30 to 24:00.

For a foretaste, see the pop-up menu published as a PDF on the OX website: hamachi with beetroot and wasabi, venison from the Odenwald forest with porcini, and for dessert pumpkin and fig with brown butter. Autumn on a plate – regional in spirit and precisely cooked. Courses may change from night to night.

• Tickets: The "Zu den Pop-up Tickets" (pop-up tickets) link on the OX website takes you to the contact page, where you can request your evening. With only 14 dates, it pays to decide early.
• Getting there: According to the HEAG timetable, tram 3 takes seven minutes from the Orangerie stop to Schloss (the palace); from there it's a short walk to Mauerstraße.
• Getting back: For weekend nights, the line 3 timetable lists night services. Check the departure in advance on the RMV journey planner, or take a taxi.

l'oxalis: brasserie cooking from the Michelin-star team in Bessungen

Are the pop-up nights sold out, or do you prefer something more low-key? The OX team also runs the brasserie l'oxalis in Bessungen, in the courtyard complex of the Bessunger Jagdhof (a former hunting lodge), overlooking the Baroque Kavaliershaus. The cooking moves between regional and international flavours. The restaurant sums up its approach as refined in taste, fair in price. On warm evenings, the garden is surprisingly quiet for a spot in the middle of town – a good choice if you want a romantic dinner in Darmstadt without committing to a full tasting menu. Below lies the historic Jagdhofkeller with its massive vaulted ceiling, which is also used for parties and corporate events.

It's open Tuesday to Saturday from 18:00, and you can book online. For guests of our studios, it's an evening stroll through Bessungen – no taxi needed. Gourmet excursions: Bib Gourmand and Michelin recommendations around Darmstadt

The surrounding region is the icing on the cake for anyone who wants to hike, cycle or taste wine by day and eat well in the evening. For context: of these addresses, only the Gaststube der Krone holds its own distinction in 2026, the Bib Gourmand. The Guide recommends the others without a star.

• Gaststube der Krone, Höchst-Hetschbach (Odenwald) – Bib Gourmand: regional cooking that Michelin highlights for its particularly good value for money. The perfect end to a day in the Odenwald. Note: closed for holidays from 12 to 18 October 2026.
• Kaltwassers Wohnzimmer, Zwingenberg (Bergstraße) – Michelin recommendation: Marc-André Kaltwasser worked in Frankfurt's Michelin-starred kitchens and now cooks in his home town. The name ("Wohnzimmer" means living room) says it all: cosy as a living room, open Wednesday to Saturday.
• Farmerhaus, Groß-Umstadt – Michelin recommendation: South African cuisine, set on a rise at the edge of the forest among vineyards. The heart of it is the terrace, with sunset views on summer evenings. An evening that feels like a little long-haul trip.
• Pizarro Fine Dining, Groß-Gerau – Michelin recommendation: Nikkei cuisine focused on the sea, with just 14 seats including a chef's table at the open kitchen. There's one set menu, which starts promptly at 19:15.

Michelin-starred dining in Frankfurt – and a quiet night's sleep in Darmstadt

Frankfurt is the region's gourmet hub, and Darmstadt is close enough to treat it like just another district: according to bahn.de, the fastest train connection takes only 16 minutes. Two-star restaurants in the 2026 Guide include:

• Lafleur in the Gesellschaftshaus Palmengarten: Andreas Krolik combines contemporary classics with Mediterranean touches and has offered his own vegan gourmet line since 2014.
• RAUSCH on Reuterweg, newly awarded two stars in 2026: head chef Jochim Busch builds his plates around elemental flavours such as salt, smoke, vinegar and fat.
• the dune at Hotel The Florentin: according to the hotel, awarded two stars straight away, around six months after opening.

Then there's Seven Swans on Mainkai with one star: fully vegan, in a very narrow seven-storey building overlooking the River Main. Vegetarian and vegan at Michelin-star level

Eating plant-based while still enjoying Michelin-starred cooking works better in and around Darmstadt than many people think:

• OX: According to the website, the pop-up menu is also available vegetarian. In regular service, the vegetarian menu is called "Oxalis".
• Seven Swans: fully vegan and Michelin-starred.
• Lafleur: a vegan gourmet line ("Ethical Vegan Cuisine"), plus a fully plant-based "Casual Green Lunch" Wednesday to Friday.
• Good to know: According to its website, Pizarro doesn't offer vegetarian menus; pescatarian is possible on request at least 24 hours in advance, otherwise only adjustments for allergies and intolerances.

And the day after?
