Art Nouveau in Darmstadt: a tour of the Mathildenhöhe, Hundertwasser’s Waldspirale and the Jugendstilbad

The most impressive place to experience Art Nouveau (Jugendstil in German) in Darmstadt is the Mathildenhöhe: the artists’ colony ensemble with the Wedding Tower, the Exhibition Building and the museum has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2021, and until 31 January 2027 the anniversary exhibition “A Step Ahead – 125 Years of Mathildenhöhe” shows how modern the ideas of 1901 still feel today. Two more stops round off the day: Hundertwasser’s colourful Waldspirale as a playful contrast, and a sauna evening at the Jugendstilbad (Art Nouveau baths) – all reachable by tram and bus from the Orangerie stop.
This guide takes you from 209 tower steps to a 95-degree outdoor sauna, with opening hours, a money-saving tip and a route for a full day. The starting point is easy if you stay in one of our studios in Darmstadt-Bessungen by the Orangerie: coffee from your own kitchenette, then onto tram 3 – and in the evening, self check-in means you can come back as late as you like.
Why is the Mathildenhöhe a UNESCO World Heritage Site – and what can you see there?
In 1899 an artists’ colony was founded on the Mathildenhöhe, and over four building exhibitions – in 1901, 1904, 1908 and 1914 – a whole quarter was created here as an experiment: houses, furniture, gardens and everyday design all of a piece. UNESCO added the ensemble to the World Heritage List in 2021 because it shows how the path to modern architecture began.
Much of it can be seen for free in the open air. In the Platanenhain (plane tree grove), laid out around 1830, the trees are still pruned into shape today. Between them stand sculptures, fountains and relief walls by Bernhard Hoetger, created up to the 1914 exhibition – a cycle of life in stone. You will often hear the click of boules here. Right next to it is the Lilienbecken (lily pond) by Albin Müller, and above it the golden domes of the Russian Chapel gleam. If you take photos, you will find three completely different subjects within a few metres.
Wedding Tower, Artists’ Colony Museum and “A Step Ahead”: opening hours, tickets, tours
The Hochzeitsturm (Wedding Tower) is the city’s landmark: Joseph Maria Olbrich built it in 1905–1908 to commemorate the second marriage of Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig. Its crown of five pinnacles, covered with glazed tiles, makes it unmistakable. 209 steps lead to the viewing level. Look out for the 1914 mosaics by Friedrich Wilhelm Kleukens, including “The Kiss”. Up top the wind blows, below lies the city – the moment that makes every step worth it.
- Wedding Tower: in October Sun–Thu 10:00–18:00, Fri–Sat 10:00–19:00; November to February daily 11:00–17:00 (as of October 2026). Admission €4, reduced €2. Access is restricted on wedding days.
- Artists’ Colony Museum (Museum Künstlerkolonie): in the Ernst-Ludwig-Haus, which Olbrich built in 1900–1901 as a studio building. The figures “Strength” and “Beauty” by Ludwig Habich guard the portal; inside, the museum shows works by the colony’s 23 members. Tue–Sun 11:00–18:00 (as of October 2026), €5, reduced €3, free for under-18s.
- “A Step Ahead” in the Exhibition Building: The anniversary exhibition, a key project of World Design Capital 2026, gives each of the four building exhibitions its own hall and places originals next to contemporary design. The first and last building exhibitions, 1901 and 1914, appear as colour 3D reconstructions on large screens – painstakingly developed from old photographs, with a little help from AI. Until 31 January 2027, Tue–Sun 11:00–18:00 (as of October 2026), €10, reduced €8. The combined ticket with the museum costs €12, reduced €10, and is only available on site.
Money-saving tip: During exhibitions, the Mathildenhöhe Card costs €15 and includes the museum, the Exhibition Building and the Wedding Tower plus 24 hours of free travel on buses and trams within the city (fare zone 4000); outside exhibition periods it costs €10. Paying separately for the three sites comes to €19 – without the tram and bus.
Guided tours: If you prefer to discover Art Nouveau on a guided walk, the Mathildenhöhe is the place. Darmstadt Tourismus offers a 90-minute tour of the World Heritage Site on Saturdays and Sundays at 11:00, 14:00 and 15:00, meeting at the museum’s north entrance. The Saturday 14:00 tour is bilingual in German and English – ideal if you are travelling with international guests. The tours continue indoors: the museum leads tours of “Raumkunst – Made in Darmstadt” (interior design made in Darmstadt) at the Artists’ Colony Museum on Sundays at 13:00, and of “A Step Ahead” on Saturdays at 15:00 and Sundays at 12:00 – admission plus €3 each, no registration needed (as of October 2026). Tickets can be booked online via Darmstadt Tourismus. On Thursday, 29 October 2026, #LateArtMathildenhöhe invites you to an after-work evening from 18:00: short tours at 18:30 and 19:30, drinks and music, exhibition admission €5, no registration needed.
Rosenhöhe and the Russian Chapel: the quiet corners around the Mathildenhöhe
The Russian Chapel feels like a greeting from another world: it was built in 1897–1899 to designs by Leontij Benua for the Tsar’s family during their stays in Darmstadt. Inside, an apse mosaic from St Petersburg shines, and today the Russian Orthodox congregation holds its services here. You can visit the chapel Tue–Sat 11:00–15:00 and Sun 14:00–16:00; it is closed on Mondays (as of October 2026).
If you are looking for peace afterwards, walk over to Park Rosenhöhe. You enter through the Löwentor (Lion Gate), which was moved from the Mathildenhöhe to the western park entrance in 1926. The landscape park was laid out from 1817 onwards, and its heart is the rose garden with the white Rosendom (rose dome): more than 10,000 roses of over 200 species and varieties bloom there from May to November. So on a mild autumn day there is still a scent in the air, while the mausoleums of the grand-ducal family stand among old trees. A place for couples, for photographers and for anyone who wants to catch their breath after the museum.
Fancy a drink afterwards? At the foot of the Mathildenhöhe is the Biergarten Darmstadt beer garden on Dieburger Straße. Please check in advance whether it is open in the cooler months.
Waldspirale: how to experience Darmstadt’s Hundertwasser house
First things first: the Waldspirale (“forest spiral”) is not Art Nouveau. Friedensreich Hundertwasser designed it almost a hundred years after the first building exhibition, and it was built in 1998–2000. That is exactly why it fits this tour – as a colourful counterpoint that, like the artists’ colony, brings art and living together. According to bauverein AG, the building has 105 flats and 1,048 windows, no two of them alike. The green roof spirals upwards, a golden sphere gleams at the very top, and trees grow out of the façade as “tree tenants”. The Waldspirale has been a listed monument since 2026: the city council (Magistrat) approved its protection on 27 May 2026.
Important for your visit: people live here. You experience the Waldspirale from the outside – walk once around the building, count the colours of the columns and find your favourite window. Please keep your voice down and do not photograph into flats. Whether and when guided tours take place, you can find out from the tourist information in the Darmstadt Shop. Trams 4 and 5 take you to the stop of the same name, “Waldspirale”.

Art Nouveau to unwind: swimming and sauna at the Jugendstilbad
The Jugendstilbad on Mercksplatz opened in 1909 as the central public baths. Albin Müller designed the two large Art Nouveau lamps at the entrance. After an extensive renovation from 2005 to 2008, the baths received the Hessian Monument Protection Prize in 2009. Today you swim in the former men’s pool, and the outdoor pool, open all year round, tempts even on cold days.
The real reason for the evening is the sauna area: nine saunas and steam baths, from the 90-degree Finnish sauna to the Japanese rose sauna and the Roman-Irish steam bath. The 95-degree Finnish outdoor sauna has infusion sessions (Aufguss), followed by a cold plunge pool at 12 to 15 degrees. Relaxation areas on two floors and terraces with views over the city do the rest. The German Sauna Association has awarded the baths its “SaunaPremium” rating.
- Opening hours: daily 10:00–22:00, including Sundays and public holidays; swimming ends at 21:40 (as of October 2026).
- Prices: sauna 3 hours €25.80 (Mon–Fri) or €27.80 (Sat, Sun, public holidays); pool 2 hours €8.50 or €9.50 (as of October 2026).
After the last infusion, take tram 3 from the Schloss stop back to the Orangerie – according to the HEAG timetable, it still runs after 22:00. If you would like another soak the next morning, book Studio 1 with its own bathtub. More ideas for grey days are collected in our article Darmstadt on a rainy day.

Art Nouveau in Darmstadt in one day: your route from the Orangerie by tram and bus
Don’t plan the tour for a Monday – the museum, the Exhibition Building and the Russian Chapel are closed then.
- Start in Bessungen: Before you set off, take a look inside the Bessunger Kirche (Bessungen church). Its 1908/09 redesign to plans by Friedrich Pützer created the “Brautgang” (bridal passage) with an Art Nouveau baptismal font – a detail for connoisseurs. Please check opening hours before visiting.
- Up to the Mathildenhöhe: According to the HEAG timetable, tram 3 takes you from the Orangerie to the Schloss stop in seven minutes. There, change to bus FM to “Lucasweg/Hochzeitsturm”. If you prefer to walk: according to the City of Darmstadt, it is 15 to 20 minutes uphill from the palace.
- Morning: first the Wedding Tower (open from 10:00 in October), then from 11:00 the Artists’ Colony Museum and “A Step Ahead”. On Saturdays, the bilingual tour at 14:00 fits in nicely.
- Afternoon: the Russian Chapel (Tue–Sat until 15:00), the plane tree grove and a walk through the Rosenhöhe.
- Late afternoon: bus FM back to the Schloss, then tram 5 to “Waldspirale” – the façade looks its best in daylight.
- Evening: tram back to the Schloss, a short walk to Mercksplatz and into the sauna at the Jugendstilbad.
Plan B for rainy days: The Hessisches Landesmuseum (Hessian State Museum), also at the Schloss stop, holds one of the major Art Nouveau collections: over 400 glass and ceramic pieces as well as furniture, including works by Gallé, Olbrich, Tiffany and the Wiener Werkstätte. Highlights are Henry van de Velde’s furniture for the editorial office of the magazine “Revue Blanche” and more than 250 pieces of jewellery, for example by René Lalique. Open Tue, Thu, Fri 11:00–18:00, Wed 11:00–20:00, Sat/Sun 11:00–18:00 (as of October 2026), €8, free for under-18s.
With two nights – our minimum stay – the day becomes a relaxed weekend: check available studios here. For day two, get ideas from our plan for a weekend in Darmstadt and our guide to Bessungen and the Orangerie; all the practical details are on our page about a short break in Darmstadt.
