Getting to Darmstadt by train, plane or car – and straight to the Orangerie on tram 3

The most relaxed way to reach Darmstadt is without a car: according to the HEAG timetable, tram line 3 takes you from the main station (Hauptbahnhof) to the Orangerie stop in 18 minutes, no change needed, just a few steps from our studios. From Frankfurt Airport, the AirLiner bus leaves Terminal 1 and reaches Darmstadt main station in about 30 minutes – with a Deutschlandticket (Germany's monthly public transport pass) you only pay a €3.80 surcharge.
Then the tram rings its bell one last time, and instead of station bustle you are greeted by period façades, autumn leaves on the pavement and the Orangerie garden around the corner. This guide to getting to Darmstadt collects every route with verified times and prices (as of Oct. 2026) – and tells you which ticket pays off for a few days as a couple. Our seven studios by the Orangerie in Darmstadt-Bessungen welcome you with self check-in using a personal access code, normally between 15:00 and 20:00. If your flight lands later, just let us know your arrival time in advance and you will receive the code beforehand.
Arriving in Darmstadt by train: how do you get from the main station to the studio in 18 minutes?
Darmstadt Hauptbahnhof is served by both ICE high-speed and regional trains. According to bahn.de, the fastest connection to Frankfurt (Main) takes 16 minutes, with up to 71 direct connections a day. Since December 2025, Deutsche Bahn also runs a direct ICE to Berlin every four hours, taking about 4:40 hours from Darmstadt. These service frequencies apply until the timetable change in December 2026; please check again after that.
At the main station, board tram line 3 towards Lichtenbergschule at platform (Steig) 1. It runs via Luisenplatz, Schloss and Schulstraße out to Bessungen and reaches the Orangerie stop after 18 minutes – for example departing the main station at 10:42 and arriving at Orangerie at 11:00 (Mon–Fri). Monday to Friday, line 3 runs every 20 minutes during the day and every 15 or 30 minutes in the evening. During the autumn school holidays from 5 to 18 October 2026, a special timetable has it running roughly every 10 minutes on weekdays during the day.
Important for your journey planner app: enter "Orangerie" as your destination. There is also a stop named after the street of our address, but it is on a different route and served by other lines. According to the HEAG timetable, line 7 also stops at Orangerie in addition to line 3.
Some regional trains also stop at Darmstadt Süd station (according to Wikipedia, the RB 68). For most guests, though, the main station remains the most convenient option: hop on, stow your suitcase, look out of the window.

From Frankfurt Airport to Darmstadt: AirLiner bus, S-Bahn or regional train?
The most direct way from the gate to Darmstadt is the AirLiner (line AIR), the airport bus run by HEAG mobilo. Since 7 September 2026 it has departed from Terminal 1 at stop (Steig) 11, according to the timetable daily and every 30 minutes during the day. It takes about 30 minutes to Darmstadt main station, then stops at Luisenplatz and terminates at the darmstadtium congress centre (more in our guide Attending a congress at the darmstadtium). From Terminal 2 or 3, HEAG mobilo advises first taking the SkyLine train to Terminal 1.
An example based on the regular timetable (Mon–Fri): AirLiner departs Terminal 1 at 10:47, arrives at the main station at 11:16, tram 3 departs at 11:22, arrives at Orangerie at 11:40. In just under an hour you are standing at the studio door with your suitcase.
According to RMV, a single journey from the airport to Darmstadt costs €10.70 for adults including the surcharge, and €7.90 for children aged 6 to 14. With a Deutschlandticket you only pay a €3.80 surcharge. DB tickets and BahnCard 25 and 50 are not valid. Payment is cashless, via the HEAG mobilo app or on board by card or smartphone. Bicycles are not carried on the bus. During the autumn school holidays (5–18 October 2026), roadworks on Rheinstraße mean it stops at Mathildenplatz instead of Luisenplatz.
Alternatively, take a train or S-Bahn (suburban rail): bahn.de lists sample connections between Darmstadt and Frankfurt Airport of 30 to 45 minutes, some with a change. With a Deutschlandticket you can, for example, take the S-Bahn to Frankfurt main station and change there to a regional train or the S3 to Darmstadt. If you are commuting to the trade fair, see our article Messe Frankfurt: staying in Darmstadt.

Early flight from FRA: when does the first AirLiner leave?
According to the timetable, the first AirLiner departs daily at 4:02 from the darmstadtium congress centre, stops at Luisenplatz at 4:06 and at the main station (stop/Steig 20) at 4:15, and reaches Terminal 1 at 4:45. After that it runs every 30 minutes. The last departure from the main station is at 23:30. In the other direction, the last bus leaves Terminal 1 at 0:02 and arrives at the main station at 0:31.
From the Orangerie stop, the first tram 3 leaves at 4:23 Monday to Friday. It reaches Luisenplatz at 4:32 and the main station at 4:40. That gets you the AirLiner at 4:36 from Luisenplatz or at 4:45 from the main station, both arriving at Terminal 1 at 5:15. With four to five minutes, however, the connection is tight. For the very first bus, or for more of a buffer, it is better to book a taxi the evening before; your airline will tell you how early you need to be at the terminal. During the autumn school holidays, change at the main station, as the Luisenplatz stop is not served.
The nice thing about an early start from the studio: no reception, no key handover – you simply leave with your access code. Check in online the evening before, perhaps at the desk by the window in Studio 3. In the morning the coffee machine is running, your suitcase is by the door, and outside Bessungen is still quiet.
Deutschlandticket, RMV day ticket or Darmstadt Card – which ticket is worth it?
The Deutschlandticket costs €63 a month in 2026 and, according to the VDV, €66.80 from 1 January 2027. It is a monthly subscription you can cancel each month, and it is valid on Darmstadt's trams and buses as well as on regional trains and S-Bahn services, but not on ICE and IC trains. On the AirLiner a €3.80 surcharge applies.
Without a Deutschlandticket, an RMV day ticket is good value; according to RMV it already pays off from the second journey. Under the RMV 2026 price list it costs €6.00 within the "Darmstadt Mitte" city fare zone and €8.80 at price level 3. If you are travelling as a couple, the group day ticket for up to five people is cheaper than two day tickets: €10.20 and €14.90 respectively. The RMVgo or HEAG mobilo app shows you which fare applies to your journey from Orangerie when you buy.
The Darmstadt Card combines an RMV ticket for the extended city area (fare zone 40) with discounts at museums and other attractions plus a free guided city tour. It costs €10 for one day and €15 for two days – a good match for our two-night minimum stay. You can get it online as a PDF for your smartphone or at the "Darmstadt Shop" tourist information office at Luisenstraße 12 (Mon–Fri 8:00–18:00, Sat 10:00–18:00, closed on public holidays; as of Oct. 2026).
- With a Deutschlandticket: nothing else needed, just €3.80 for the AirLiner.
- Short break with museums and a city tour: Darmstadt Card.
- Two of you out and about a lot: group day ticket.
For what you can fit into two days, see our plan for a weekend in Darmstadt; everything about staying with us for a short break in Darmstadt is here.
Driving to Darmstadt: low emission zone, Bessungen parking zone and parking at the studio
On the A5, take the "Darmstadt Mitte" exit; coming from the south, the A67 also leads there. According to the darmstadtium, you then continue via the Cityzubringer feeder road onto Rheinstraße (B26). Since November 2015, Darmstadt has had a large low emission zone (Umweltzone), which only vehicles with a green emissions sticker may enter. In addition, according to the city, driving restrictions apply in the eastern part of Hügelstraße and in Heinrichstraße between Heidelberger Straße and Karlstraße for diesel vehicles meeting Euro standards 1 to 5 and petrol vehicles meeting Euro standards 0 to 2. Heinrichstraße is one of the routes into Bessungen, so check your vehicle's Euro standard before following your satnav.
From Monday, 19 October 2026, parking in Bessungen-Süd will be regulated anew. In parking zone BE3 (south of Hermannstraße, west of Klappacher Straße, east of Donnersbergring and north of the Lichtenbergschule), on-street parking costs €0.75 per 30 minutes Monday to Saturday from 6:00 to 21:00, with a maximum stay of four hours. Sundays and public holidays are free. You can pay in cash, by debit card (EC-Karte) or via app. According to this description of the area, our studios by the Orangerie are also within the zone; the car park at the Orangerie is included with adjusted hours. According to the city, this means parking is now managed throughout Bessungen.
For several days in a row, kerbside parking is therefore no longer an option during the day. Ask about a paid parking space on the premises when you book, or simply leave the car at home – tram 3 stops practically on the doorstep. See all studios and their availability here. Roadworks and closures around Bessungen are listed daily at HEAG mobilo and on the IGEL3 project page.
By bike or rental bike: Call a Bike and taking your bike on public transport
Darmstadt is compact, and from Bessungen you can get a lot done by bike. According to bahnhof.de, DB Call a Bike is available throughout Darmstadt, with bikes rented via the app; OpenStreetMap also lists a station at Bessunger Platz. According to bahnhof.de, the Starter tariff costs €1 per 15 minutes, up to €9 a day. With a subscription (€5.90 a month) you pay €1 per 30 minutes, up to €5 a day, and the first 30 minutes of every ride are free. In Darmstadt you can also, for a fee, leave the bikes within a flex zone outside the stations.
According to HEAG mobilo, you can take your own bike on buses and trains in the RMV area free of charge – just not on the AirLiner. If you are cycling from Frankfurt, use the FRM1 cycle superhighway: according to the State of Hesse, the southern section from Langen to Darmstadt-Nord has been complete over around 11 kilometres since the end of 2024. For where to go next, see our day trips around Darmstadt.

Our tips
- In your journey planner app, enter "Orangerie" as the destination, not the street name of our address – the stop with that name is on a different route served by other lines.

- From 19 October 2026, on-street parking in Bessungen-Süd is limited to four hours Mon–Sat 6:00–21:00 – request a parking space on the premises in advance.
- Check ICE frequencies and long-distance times again after the timetable change in December 2026; roadworks are listed daily at HEAG mobilo.
