If you need accommodation for Messe Frankfurt without the trade fair crowds, Darmstadt is a quiet and fast choice: according to bahn.de, the fastest train takes 16 minutes to Frankfurt (Main) Hauptbahnhof (main station), and from there four S-Bahn (suburban rail) lines take you two stops to the fairgrounds. In the evening you are back in Darmstadt-Bessungen, where the seven BSG Living studios by the Orangerie await you with a kitchenette, workspace, Wi-Fi and self check-in.

Instead of a hotel corridor, you get your own coffee by the window and a baroque garden on your doorstep. This guide shows you how to get to the fair, which events are coming up until summer 2027, which ticket is worth buying and where to catch your breath after a long day at the fair.

Messe Frankfurt accommodation: why Darmstadt is the relaxed alternative

According to the Frankfurt Book Fair, Frankfurt has around 57,000 hotel beds, with around 12,000 rooms within walking distance of the exhibition grounds. During major fairs, exactly these rooms are in high demand. If you are looking for an affordable hotel near Messe Frankfurt, it is worth looking at the surrounding region (more on our page about budget accommodation in Darmstadt), and Darmstadt is particularly well placed: the two cities’ main stations are around 26 kilometres apart as the crow flies, and according to bahn.de there are up to 71 direct connections a day.

You really feel the difference in the evening. After a day breathing exhibition-hall air, you get off at the Orangerie stop and find yourself in a neighbourhood of late-19th-century houses, small cafés and the Orangerie garden. The baroque garden was laid out from 1716 onwards, and in summer the paths are lined with potted citrus trees. In the evening it gets quiet here – just right before the next day at the fair.

On top of that, Darmstadt belongs to the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV), the regional transport network. For several fairs, your admission ticket therefore also covers the train journey from Darmstadt.

How long does it take from Darmstadt to Messe Frankfurt?

The journey has three stages. The door-to-door time depends on the time of day and connections, so plan it the evening before in the RMV journey planner or the RMVgo app.

  1. Studio – Darmstadt main station: Tram 3 runs from the Orangerie stop to the main station without changing; according to the HEAG timetable, it takes 19 minutes. Monday to Friday, it comes every 20 minutes during the day. From 5 to 18 October 2026 (autumn school holidays), and therefore also during the Book Fair, HEAG mobilo runs a special timetable with trams roughly every ten minutes.
  2. By train from Darmstadt to Frankfurt: ICE and regional trains run directly to Frankfurt (Main) Hbf. According to bahn.de, the fastest connection takes 16 minutes, and a regional train in the sample search 17 minutes.
  3. Main station – fairgrounds: According to Messe Frankfurt, S-Bahn lines S3, S4, S5 and S6 take you two stops to “Frankfurt (Main) Messe” station at the Torhaus entrance. The U4 underground runs one stop to “Festhalle/Messe” at the City entrance, and trams 16 and 17 take three stops. On foot it is about ten minutes – the Messeturm tower with its pyramid tip shows you the way.

Depending on the service, you can even travel without changing: since December 2024 the S6 has run to Darmstadt Hbf, and according to Messe Frankfurt it is one of the lines that stop at Messe station. However, not every S6 runs the whole route, and it stops more often along the way than regional trains and the ICE. The RMV journey planner shows whether your S6 goes all the way to the fair and what is faster at your time of travel.

Trade fair dates 2026/27: Book Fair, Ambiente, ISH and ACHEMA

Planning to visit a fair in 2026 or 2027 from Darmstadt? These are the dates given by the organisers (as of 4 October 2026). For major fairs, it pays to book early.

  • Frankfurt Book Fair, 7–11 October 2026: The guest of honour is Czechia. From Wednesday to Saturday it is open from 09:00 to 18:30; private visitors are admitted from Friday at 11:00. On Sunday the fair closes at 17:30. The next Book Fair takes place from 6 to 10 October 2027.
  • Mainova Frankfurt Marathon, 25 October 2026: Race packs are handed out at the marathonmall in Hall 1 of Messe Frankfurt, on Friday from 12:00 to 19:00, on Saturday from 10:00 to 19:00 and on Sunday from 07:00 to 09:30. The finish is in the Festhalle. You can cook your pre-race pasta in your own kitchenette.
  • Ambiente, 29 January – 2 February 2027: The consumer goods fair is open from Friday to Monday from 09:00 to 18:00, and on Tuesday from 09:00 to 17:00.
  • ISH, 15–19 March 2027: The fair for water, heating and air is open to trade visitors only from 15 to 18 March, from 09:00 to 18:00 each day. On 19 March, private visitors are welcome too, with opening hours from 09:00 to 17:00.
  • ACHEMA, 14–18 June 2027: The process industry fair for chemicals, pharma and process engineering. If you also have appointments in Darmstadt, the City of Science, you can combine both.

Dates can change, so check the relevant fair’s website before booking. What else is happening in Darmstadt at the same time is in our Darmstadt events calendar.

A studio instead of a trade fair hotel: kitchenette, workspace and self check-in after long days

A day at the fair rarely ends when the halls close. Business cards need sorting and quotes need writing, and for that you need a table that isn’t doubling as a luggage rack. This is how the studios are set up:

  • Workspace and Wi-Fi: In Studio 3 the desk is by the window, Studio 5 has its own desk and a kitchen counter with bar stools, and in Studio 4 the large wooden table has room for a laptop and brochures.
  • Kitchenette: Hob, fridge, kettle, toaster and a coffee machine with coffee. The first coffee brews while you go through the hall plan, and in the evening you cook something simple instead of hunting for a restaurant table.
  • Self check-in: Before arrival, you complete the online check-in and receive your personal access code. With it, your studio is accessible around the clock. If you won’t arrive until after the exhibitors’ evening or a late flight, please let us know briefly in advance.
  • For several nights: Bookings start at two nights. Bed linen and towels are included, a washing machine and dryer are available in the building (for a fee), and cleaning during your stay is available on request. On departure day, you can leave your luggage by arrangement and head to the fair one more time.

Each studio sleeps up to two people. If you are coming with your stand team, simply book several studios in the same building. What else we offer business travellers and teams is on our page business apartment in Darmstadt.

Which ticket? Trade fair ticket, Deutschlandticket and RMV day ticket

Check your admission ticket before buying a travel ticket, because Darmstadt lies within the RMV area.

  • Trade fair ticket: According to Messe Frankfurt, admission tickets for Ambiente and ISH marked with the RMV note are valid as a travel ticket to the fair and back throughout the entire RMV fare area. Online tickets are only valid together with an ID card or passport, and a day ticket bought at the box office is only valid for a single journey from the fair. For the Book Fair, trade visitor tickets include travel within the RMV, but private visitor tickets do not.
  • Marathon: According to the organisers, on marathon Sunday your race number is valid as a combined ticket on all buses and trains throughout the RMV until the end of service.
  • Deutschlandticket: Germany’s monthly public transport pass costs €63 per month in 2026 and €66.80 from 1 January 2027. It is valid on trams, the S-Bahn and regional trains between Darmstadt and Frankfurt, but not on ICE or IC trains.
  • RMV day ticket: According to the RMV, a day ticket pays off from the second journey. With the group day ticket, up to five people can travel for a whole day, and according to the RMV 2026 price list, for two people it is cheaper than two individual day tickets in every fare level. The RMVgo app shows you the price of the Darmstadt–Frankfurt day ticket when you buy it.
  • ICE: Without a trade fair ticket or Deutschlandticket, bahn.de offers ICE saver fares between Darmstadt and Frankfurt from €6.99 (as of 3 October 2026).

Staying near Frankfurt Airport: to Darmstadt by AirLiner or train

The airport isn’t far from Darmstadt either. The AirLiner bus (line AIR) starts at the darmstadtium congress centre and stops at Luisenplatz and the main station. According to the timetable, it takes 30 minutes from the main station to Terminal 1, running every 30 minutes during the day. At the airport, it stops at Terminal 1, stand 11. A single fare from Darmstadt costs €10.70; with a Deutschlandticket you only pay the €3.80 surcharge. Deutsche Bahn (DB) tickets are not valid on the AirLiner, not even with a BahnCard 25 or 50; with a BahnCard 100 you only pay the surcharge.

By train, according to bahn.de, the fastest connection from the airport to Darmstadt Hbf takes 30 minutes, followed by tram 3 to the Orangerie. That suits anyone looking for affordable accommodation near Frankfurt Airport before an early flight who would rather sleep in a residential neighbourhood with cafés and a park: you make your own breakfast in the kitchenette, and the total price shown for the studios already includes all fees. If you land late, self check-in still gets you into your studio. We have summarised all the ways to reach Darmstadt in our article on getting to Darmstadt.

Unwind in Darmstadt in the evening instead of the trade fair hustle

After eight hours on exhibition-hall carpet, your feet and your head need something different. Three places to unwind after work:

Jugendstilbad: sauna instead of hotel bar

The baths on Mercksplatz were built from 1907 to 1909 as Darmstadt’s municipal baths, in Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) style. Today there are swimming pools, an outdoor pool, a spa area and a sauna area. They are open daily from 10:00 to 22:00, and swimming ends at 21:40 (as of October 2026). Afterwards, tram 3 takes you from the Schloss stop back to the Orangerie.

Café LINIE 3: breakfast into the evening

This café in Bessungen is named after the tram line that runs through the neighbourhood. Breakfast is served here for late risers too, along with big milky coffees in French bowls, and in the evening apple wine from the Odenwald region or a glass of wine. It is open daily from 08:00 to 24:00, and from 09:00 on Sundays and public holidays (as of October 2026).

Orangerie garden: a morning walk before the train

Right on your doorstep is the baroque garden with fountains and tree-lined avenues. A lap in the early morning while the air is still cool, then off to the tram: a better start to a day at the fair than any hotel lobby. Read more about the neighbourhood in our guide to Bessungen and the Orangerie, and if you also have a conference in Darmstadt, read our article on attending a congress at the darmstadtium. Our tips

  • Special timetables apply during Book Fair week: from 5 to 18 October 2026, tram 3 runs roughly every ten minutes during the day, Monday to Friday. During this period, due to roadworks on Rheinstraße, the AirLiner stops at Mathildenplatz instead of Luisenplatz (towards the airport: stand 17).
  • Online trade fair tickets are only valid on the RMV together with an ID card or passport. So bring your ID for the train journey too.
  • You need an RMV ticket for the AirLiner: DB tickets are not valid, not even with a BahnCard 25 or 50. With a Deutschlandticket or BahnCard 100, you only pay a €3.80 surcharge.
  • From 19 October 2026, on-street parking in Bessungen-Süd is subject to charges Monday to Saturday from 06:00 to 21:00 and limited to four hours. Ask about a parking space on the property when you book, or leave the car at home.
  • Trade fair dates can change. Check the organiser’s website before booking, and book early for major fairs.
