Darmstadt events 2026/27: your events calendar from Heiner Wiesn to Heinerfest

The main events in Darmstadt until autumn 2027 are the Heiner Wiesn (from 23 October 2026), the Christmas market (16 November to 23 December 2026), the Schlossgrabenfest at Whitsun (13–16 May 2027), the Heinerfest (usually in early July) and the wine festival from 2 to 5 September 2027. In between there are Kerb fairs (traditional church fairs), premieres at the Staatstheater, a triathlon in the Woog lake and a flea market where people are already browsing at six in the morning.
This calendar of Darmstadt events sorts everything by season, lists only dates with an official source and says honestly what has not yet been confirmed (as of October 2026). Here is how to use it: find your date, then check the availability of our studios by the Orangerie straight away – with kitchenette, workspace and Wi-Fi, bookable from two nights, so just right for a festival weekend.
Darmstadt events in autumn 2026: Heiner Wiesn, Büchner Prize and Kerb
Darmstadt’s 2026 events continue in autumn with a beer-tent atmosphere: on the Messplatz in the north of the city, the Heiner Wiesn takes place, the Hessian Oktoberfest with party bands, a small funfair and bull riding. The party runs over three weekends – 23/24 October, 30/31 October and 6/7 November 2026, each from 17:00 to 23:00. New this year is an after-work evening on Thursday, 5 November. Tickets and table packages are only available in the organiser’s shop, where you will also find the prices.
Things get very quiet on Saturday, 24 October 2026, at the Staatstheater: the Deutsche Akademie für Sprache und Dichtung (German Academy for Language and Literature), based in Darmstadt, presents the Georg Büchner Prize there, this year to Christine Wunnicke (endowed with €50,000). The Academy does not say whether tickets are available to the public – please check before you go. The theatre programme is confirmed: the musical A Chorus Line premieres on 31 October, the family play Ronja Räubertochter (Ronia, the Robber’s Daughter) on 8 November, and Die Fledermaus on 27 November.
If you are looking for living southern Hessian festival culture, head to Arheilgen: the Oarhelljer Kerb runs from 29 October to 3 November 2026 at the “Zum Goldnen Löwen” community centre. According to Darmstadt Tourismus, the highlight is the show by the Kerb team, newly rehearsed every year, on the Kerb Saturday from 20:00. On the Thursday before, 29 October, the anniversary exhibition “A Step Ahead” on the Mathildenhöhe opens from 18:00 for the after-work format #LateArtMathildenhöhe with short guided tours, drinks and music.
Advent and winter: Christmas market, forest Christmas and games festival
On 16 November 2026 the lights go on in the city centre: the Darmstadt Christmas market spreads across Marktplatz, Luisenplatz, Ludwigsplatz and Friedensplatz until 23 December. Highlights include the Lange Ludwig monument, decorated according to Darmstadt Tourismus with 30,000 LEDs, and the Marktplatz tree with its light show, which runs once an hour from 18:00 in the evening; children make a beeline for the nostalgic horse carousel on Friedensplatz. At the stalls of the twin towns, the choice ranges from Hungarian-style lángos to cheese and wine from Saanen in Switzerland. Opening hours for 2026 have not yet been published – please check before you go. Everything else is in our guide to the Darmstadt Christmas market.
Two dates turn a stroll round the market into an Advent weekend: on 21 and 22 November 2026, the darmstadtium hosts “Darmstadt spielt” (Darmstadt plays), according to the organisers Hesse’s largest games festival – Saturday 13:00–22:00, Sunday 11:00–19:00, board games for children, parents and grandparents. On Friday, 27 November, comes Feuer & Eis (Fire & Ice): shops and the Christmas market stay open longer, and fire shows and icy walk-act performers move through the city centre.
The quiet option is in our own neighbourhood: on Sunday, 13 December 2026, the Bürgeraktion Bessungen-Ludwigshöhe (a local residents’ association) celebrates the Waldweihnacht auf der Ludwigshöhe (forest Christmas), on Bessungen’s local hill with the Ludwigsturm tower. Cold air and forest paths instead of city-centre bustle – please check the 2026 programme on the association’s website. In addition, “A Step Ahead – 125 Years of Mathildenhöhe” runs until 31 January 2027 (Tue–Sun 11:00–18:00, as of October 2026), a lovely destination for the days between Christmas and New Year; it is closed on 24, 25 and 31 December and on 1 January.

Darmstadt 2027 in spring: Frühjahrsmess and Schlossgrabenfest
In April the carousels turn again in the city centre: from 16 to 25 April 2027 the Darmstädter Frühjahrsmess (spring fair) arrives with rides plus a pottery and sales market – ten days of funfair that families in particular look forward to. The official website does not yet name the exact fairground; please check before you go.
At Whitsun the city then belongs to music. The Schlossgrabenfest runs from 13 to 16 May 2027 around the Residenzschloss, between Marktplatz, Karolinenplatz and Ernst-Ludwigs-Platz. In 2026, more than 60 bands and 12 DJs played on three festival stages plus a club area; the organiser calls it Hesse’s largest music festival. Advance sales for 2027 are under way; day tickets, the festival pass and the current price tier are listed in the ticket shop, and children up to and including 12 years get in free when accompanied by an adult with a ticket. For groups of friends, it is a festival without a tent: stage and bass in the evening, a quiet studio in Bessungen at night. Our Schlossgrabenfest guide explains the stages, tickets and getting there.
Summer: Heinerfest, triathlon, summer courses and CSD
At the end of June things get sporty and technical at the same time. On Sunday, 27 June 2027, up to 700 participants plunge into the Großer Woog at the ENTEGA Heinerman – Olympic distance or sprint, individually or as a relay. Registration has been open since 1 October 2026, at the lowest price until the end of the year (Olympic €80, sprint €70). Race packs can be collected at the Woog on the Saturday before from 16:00 to 19:00; arriving the day before saves you a rush on race morning. On the same Saturday, 26 June, the Eisenbahnbetriebsfeld Darmstadt (railway operations lab) opens from 11:00 to 17:00 with free admission: on around 500 square metres, railway operations run there with signal boxes ranging from mechanical to electronic – a tip for families and technology fans.
The Heinerfest is Darmstadt’s big summer festival: five days of music, local dialect shows, rides and children’s activities spread across the city centre from the palace to the Herrngarten. In 2026 it ran from Thursday, 2 July, to Monday, 6 July, with the big closing fireworks on Monday evening at 22:30. The organiser has not yet published the 2027 date; the festival is usually in early July. If you stay for the fireworks, it is best not to leave until Tuesday. More in our Heinerfest guide.
From 10 to 24 July 2027, the Darmstädter Ferienkurse (Darmstadt Summer Course for New Music) return. The Internationales Musikinstitut Darmstadt holds them every two years, a tradition that began in 1946: two weeks of new music with composers, musicians and students from many countries. For a stay like this, a studio with kitchenette and workspace is a more relaxed base than a hotel room. In August come the Kunsthandwerkermarkt (crafts market) on Friedensplatz (14/15 August 2027) with jewellery, ceramics, fashion and woodwork, and on Saturday, 21 August 2027, CSD Darmstadt (Pride), which starts at 12:00 on Karolinenplatz.

Late summer: wine festival, flea market and the Kerb by the Orangerie
On the first weekend in September, Wilhelminenstraße becomes an open-air wine bar: the Darmstädter Weinfest (wine festival) runs in 2027 from Thursday, 2 September, to Sunday, 5 September. Winemakers from the Hessische Bergstraße, the Rheingau, Rheinhessen and the Pfalz pour their wines, joined by producers from the Nahe and Franconia and the Odenwald winegrowers’ cooperative. A glass of Bergstraße Riesling in the evening sun, then back to Bessungen without any hurry – that is the taste of late summer. Two weeks later, on Saturday, 18 September 2027, the flea market on Karolinenplatz opens from 06:00 to 16:00; vintage hunters arrive at first light.
Our guests celebrate the festival with the shortest walk right outside the door: the Bessunger Kerb is held in the Orangerie garden, in 2026 from 18 to 21 September. The 2027 date has not yet been set; it usually falls on the third weekend in September. In southern Hesse, Kerb means the church fair, and in Bessungen a fabric rabbit with a carrot swings from the Kerwebaum (fair tree) – a nod to the nickname of Bessungen’s residents, “Lapping”, meaning rabbit. Once you have celebrated enough, you are quickly back in your studio with kitchenette. Our guide to Bessungen and the Orangerie shows what else the neighbourhood has to offer. A week earlier, the Martinsviertel celebrates its Watzekerb on Riegerplatz, with a music night in the pubs on Saturday (2026: 11–14 September).
The Orangerie also plays a role in high summer: it is one of the venues of the Residenzfestspiele, which in 2026 brought jazz, classical music, musicals and opera to historic venues from 31 July to 9 August. The date of the 2027 Residenzfestspiele is still open – please check the festival website.
Trade fairs and conferences: when Darmstadt is in particularly high demand
It is not only festivals that fill the calendar. Specialist conferences are regularly held at the darmstadtium – in autumn 2026, for example, the CADFEM World Conference (20–22 October) and the INNODAY (29 October). Then there are the big Frankfurt trade fairs, for which Darmstadt is a quiet alternative base: the Frankfurt Book Fair from 7 to 11 October 2026, Ambiente from 29 January to 2 February 2027, ISH from 15 to 19 March 2027 and ACHEMA from 14 to 18 June 2027. You can find train connections to Frankfurt in the RMV journey planner; how to combine trade fair and accommodation cleverly is explained in the article Messe Frankfurt: staying in Darmstadt.
For trade visitors, what counts is what a hotel room rarely offers: a proper desk, stable Wi-Fi, a kitchenette for coffee before the first appointment and self check-in without waiting at reception.
How to secure your studio for the event date
From calendar to key takes three steps:
- Choose your date and set your arrival and departure – for festivals that run until Monday, like the Heinerfest, an extra night is worth it.
- Enter your dates on the home page and see the available studios; each of the seven studios is furnished for up to two people.
- Book direct online, from two nights – just right for a festival weekend from Friday to Sunday.
For the festival weekends at Whitsun and in July, it pays to plan early. For the Bessunger Kerb you simply step outside the door, and a walk through Bessungen takes you to the forest Christmas on the Ludwigshöhe. Dates can change – a quick look at the linked organiser’s website before your trip is always worthwhile. You will find ideas for the days around the festival on our page about a short break in Darmstadt.

Our tips
- The Heinerfest and the Schlossgrabenfest offer their own public transport tickets for up to five people – check the price and area of validity on the festival’s website before you travel.

- In 2025 the Christmas market stayed closed on Totensonntag (the Protestant day of remembrance for the dead). Whether this applies again in 2026 (22 November, also the second day of “Darmstadt spielt”), please check before you go.
- Heinerman starters: race packs are available on Saturday, 26 June 2027, from 16:00 to 19:00 at the Woog – on race day only until 08:30.
- Planning to visit the flea market on Karolinenplatz? It starts at 06:00, breakfast is available from 08:00; there is no registration or pitch reservation.
