Darmstadt Christmas market 2026: the market runs from Monday, 16 November, to Wednesday, 23 December, on Marktplatz, Luisenplatz, Ludwigsplatz and Friedensplatz right in the city centre. Opening hours for 2026 have not yet been published; in 2025 the market opened daily at 12:00 and closed at 22:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, otherwise at 21:00 (as of October 2026, please check before you go).

In between lies everything that makes Advent special: cinnamon and cloves in the cold air, the Langer Ludwig (“Long Ludwig”, the city’s landmark column) sparkling above Luisenplatz with 30,000 LEDs, and a historic horse carousel turning its rounds on Friedensplatz. One evening at the market easily becomes a whole weekend – with a games festival, a Christmas comedy, a forest Christmas celebration and the sauna. Your base for it all: our studios by the Orangerie in Darmstadt-Bessungen, from whose stop the tram runs into the city centre without changing.

Darmstadt Christmas market 2026: dates and opening hours

The dates are fixed: 16 November to 23 December 2026, according to Darmstadt Marketing. In 2025 the city announced the daily hours in its press release of 3 November. For orientation, here are the 2025 hours:

  • Monday to Thursday: 12:00–21:00
  • Friday and Saturday: 12:00–22:00
  • Sunday: 12:00–21:00
  • Winterdorf (winter village) on Ludwigsplatz: Monday to Saturday 12:00–19:00, closed on Sundays

In 2025 the market stayed closed on Totensonntag (the Protestant day of remembrance for the dead). In 2026 this day falls on 22 November – whether the stalls will stay shut again is not yet confirmed, so please check before you go.

To get there, the city recommends bus and tram to Luisenplatz or to the Schloss stop by the Marktplatz, or alternatively the HeinerLiner, the on-demand shuttle run by HEAG mobilo. In 2025, cycling was banned between 12:00 and 22:00 on the Marktplatz and on Ernst-Ludwigs-Platz Ost/Friedensplatz; bikes belong at the bike stations around the market. And parking for the Christmas market? If you come by car, it is best to leave it at the studio: there is free on-street parking, though not always right outside the house, plus paid parking spaces on the premises, which please request from us in advance. According to the HEAG timetable, tram lines 3 and 7 run from the Orangerie stop to the Schloss and Luisenplatz without changing.

Highlights: Langer Ludwig, light show and stalls from twin towns

The market is at its most beautiful after dark. On Luisenplatz, the Ludwigsmonument – the “Langer Ludwig”, a good 39 metres tall – wears 30,000 LEDs in 150 strings of lights. In 2025 a 20-metre Nordmann fir with 13,500 LED bulbs stood on the Marktplatz, its lights animated every hour from 18:00; Darmstadt Marketing’s page on the 2026 market also mentions this light show. The Christmas pyramid glows as well, and children are drawn to the historic horse carousel on Friedensplatz.

The heart of the market is the stalls from Darmstadt’s twin towns. Darmstadt Marketing mentions Hungarian lángos as well as wine and cheese from Saanen in Switzerland. In 2025 they took turns: Liepāja (Latvia) for the entire run, Saanen from 24 to 30 November, Troyes (France) from 1 to 7 December, Gyönk (Hungary) from 1 to 14 December and Uzhhorod (Ukraine) from 15 to 23 December. Please check the 2026 schedule before you go – if you want lángos, you should know when the Hungarians are there.

In total there were 67 stalls at the market in 2025: basketry and cork goods, wooden toys, Christmas tree decorations and jewellery, plus bratwurst, fish, cheese, churros and roast chestnuts. Vegans won’t go hungry either: vegetarian and vegan options are part of the mix, a falafel stall was new in 2025, and the stall overview from Darmstadt Tourismus could be filtered by vegan offerings. At the same time, the Carree hosted “Heiligs Blechle”, a food-truck Christmas market with soups, quiche, vegan dishes and mulled wine from local winemakers.

And then there is the Glühweinprinzessin (mulled wine princess): Darmstadt has had one every year since 2011, and at the opening she presents the new design of the mulled wine mug. In 2025 it featured the Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall); on Saturdays at 17:00 the princess welcomed the groups on the Advent city walking tours.

Advent away from the crowds: Waldweihnacht on the Ludwigshöhe in Bessungen

If you prefer things quieter, stay in the neighbourhood on the third Sunday of Advent. On Sunday, 13 December 2026, the Bürgeraktion Bessungen-Ludwigshöhe (a local citizens’ association) holds its Waldweihnacht (forest Christmas) on the Ludwigshöhe, Bessungen’s home hill with the Ludwigsturm tower, opened in 1882. Instead of rows of stalls, there are forest paths and clouds of breath over your mug.

The 2026 programme has not yet been published. According to the news portal da.news, this is how it went in 2025: at 14:00 the Bessungen school choir sang, at around 16:00 the brass choir of the Liebfrauen parish played, St Nicholas dropped by, and there was mulled wine, children’s punch, bratwurst and campfire bread on a stick. Also at 14:00, a guided walk of around one hour through the Bessungen forest started at the music academy on Ludwigshöhstraße. Read more about the neighbourhood in our guide to Bessungen and the Orangerie.

Afterwards it’s back into the warm: put the kettle on, put your feet up and your hiking boots by the radiator. Our studios in Bessungen are made for days like this – with kitchenette, Wi-Fi and self check-in.

Advent events: games festival, Feuer & Eis and a Christmas comedy

On the very first weekend of the market, the darmstadtium turns into one big games table: “Darmstadt spielt” (“Darmstadt plays”), according to the organisers Hesse’s largest games festival, runs on Saturday, 21 November 2026, from 13:00 to 22:00 and on Sunday, 22 November, from 11:00 to 19:00. More than 1,000 games are available to borrow, for children, parents, grandparents and anyone who gets competitive when the dice roll. The organiser announces the programme and tickets on darmstadt-spielt.de (times as of October 2026, please check before you go).

On Friday, 27 November 2026, comes Feuer & Eis (“Fire & Ice”), the Black Night Shopping event run by Darmstadt Citymarketing: shops and the Christmas market stay open longer, with fire shows and icy walk-act performers. A good evening for your gift list – our shopping guide to Darmstadt has addresses.

For events in Darmstadt in December, the Staatstheater (State Theatre) programme is worth a look. It kicks off on 27 November with the premiere of Johann Strauss’s operetta Die Fledermaus (19:30, Großes Haus), with further performances such as on 12 December. Fans of local dialect should note 3 December: that is when De Baum steht schief (“The tree is crooked”) opens in the Kammerspiele, a Christmas comedy in Hessian dialect by the Hessische Spielgemeinschaft 1925, about one hour long and recommended from age 10. Further dates include 11, 19, 20 and 23 December; tickets cost 15 to 42 euros (as of October 2026). For families, Ronja Räubertochter (Ronia, the Robber’s Daughter) is a seasonal play for ages 5 and up, for example on the afternoons of 6 and 20 December.

Warming up after the mulled wine: sauna at the Jugendstilbad and dinner in Bessungen

Cold fingers, rosy cheeks – in a Darmstadt winter, one thing helps above all: warmth right down to your bones. The Jugendstilbad (Art Nouveau baths) on Mercksplatz was completed in 1909 as the city’s central baths and received the Hessian Monument Protection Prize after its restoration in 2009. The sauna area on two levels carries the SaunaPremium seal: alongside the Finnish sauna at 90 degrees, there is a Japanese rose sauna, a Roman-Irish steam bath and an outdoor sauna at 95 degrees. It is open daily from 10:00 to 22:00; three hours of sauna cost 25.80 euros on weekdays and 27.80 euros at weekends (as of October 2026). Exceptions: the baths close at 17:00 on 16 December and stay closed on 24 and 25 December. More ideas for grey days are in Darmstadt on a rainy day.

For dinner, you don’t need to go back into the city centre. In the historic Bessunger Jagdhof (Bessungen hunting lodge), l’oxalis is cooking – the brasserie from the team behind Darmstadt’s Michelin-starred restaurant OX: regional and international flavours with a view of the Kavaliershaus, open Tuesday to Saturday from 18:00 to 24:00 (as of October 2026). If you would rather cook yourself, your studio has a kitchenette with hob, pots and crockery, for example Studio 4 with its long kitchenette by the window – enough room for a pot of mulled wine to your own recipe.

New Year’s Eve in Darmstadt: party, theatre or a quiet night in your studio

The Christmas market closes on 23 December, but December in Darmstadt goes on. On 31 December 2026 the Staatstheater has two performances at 19:30: Die Fledermaus in the Großes Haus (tickets 15 to 130 euros) and Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing in Leander Haußmann’s version in the Kleines Haus (15 to 80 euros, as of October 2026). The operetta is based on the French comedy “Le Réveillon” – champagne mood included.

Younger and louder celebrations happen at 806qm, the cultural centre of the TU Darmstadt student union (AStA) on Alexanderstraße: a New Year’s Eve party in the club is on the programme for 31 December 2026, and on 23 December “Homecoming” with heineraudio invites you in. If you want to start the last day of the year calmly, sweat it out in the morning at the Jugendstilbad, open on New Year’s Eve from 10:00 to 16:00 and on New Year’s Day from 14:00.

Or simply stay in: cook for yourselves, raise a glass, step to the window at midnight. Studio 1 even has a bathtub waiting for you afterwards. The studios can be booked from two nights, ideal for a long weekend between Christmas and New Year. Everything you need for planning is on our page about a short break in Darmstadt, and more dates are in the events calendar for Darmstadt.

Our tips

  • The design of the mulled wine mug changes every year; the Glühweinprinzessin presents it at the opening of the market.
  • Coming by bike? In 2025 cycling was banned from 12:00 to 22:00 on Marktplatz, Ernst-Ludwigs-Platz Ost and Friedensplatz – there are bike stations at Luisenplatz, at the Weißer Turm, around the Marktplatz and in front of the Landesmuseum.
  • From the “Orangerie” stop, lines 3 and 7 run towards Schloss and Luisenplatz – check your connection in advance in the RMV or HEAG mobilo journey planner.
  • In 2025, duos and small bands played on the Marktplatz stage on Fridays from 18:30 to 21:00 (“Bandfreitag”); from December there was a family programme on Sundays from 15:00 to 17:00.
  • The Sunday of “Darmstadt spielt” (22 November 2026) is also Totensonntag – if you want to combine both, check beforehand whether the Christmas market is open that day.
