Darmstadt on a rainy day is an invitation to head indoors: until 17 January 2027, the Hessisches Landesmuseum (Hessian State Museum) is showing the family exhibition "Drachen – Mythos und Wirklichkeit" (Dragons – Myth and Reality), and children and young people up to 18 get in free. Afterwards, the Jugendstilbad (Art Nouveau baths) awaits with its sauna area, open daily until 22:00 (as of Oct. 2026) – so the rainy day ends somewhere warm.

Add to that the Kunsthalle with "Courant Van Gogh", the palace museum, a free hands-on space for particle physics in the pedestrian zone, two climbing halls, arthouse cinema, theatre and cabaret. You can reach many of these places without changing on tram 3 from the Orangerie stop, right by our studios in Darmstadt-Bessungen. This guide sorts rainy-day activities by mood: culture, kids, wellness, exercise and evenings out.

Museums for every age: the Landesmuseum, the Kunsthalle and the palace museum

When the rain is pelting down on Friedensplatz, the Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt is the place to go. This universal museum brings art, cultural history and natural history together under one roof: Art Nouveau from Gallé to the Darmstadt Artists' Colony, the "Block Beuys" with almost 300 works by Joseph Beuys in seven rooms, and fossils from the Messel Pit that stop children and grandparents alike in their tracks. If you are visiting with teenagers, you will like the prices: admission is free up to age 18, adults pay €8, concessions €5.

  • Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt – opening hours: Tue, Thu, Fri 11:00–18:00, Wed 11:00–20:00, Sat, Sun and public holidays 11:00–18:00, closed on Mondays (as of Oct. 2026). The late Wednesday opening fits nicely after a working day.

Contemporary art is on show at the Kunsthalle Darmstadt on Steubenplatz, run by the Kunstverein Darmstadt art association, whose roots go back to 1833, and housed in a building from 1957. The current exhibition: Hilarius Hofstede with "Courant Van Gogh" from 27 September 2026 to 10 January 2027, alongside Heide Nord and Anna Vovan in Studio West and, until 15 November 2026, Wolfgang Klee in Studio Ost. It is open Wed–Sun 11:00–17:00 (as of Oct. 2026); admission is €12, concessions €7.

At the Schlossmuseum (palace museum) you travel through five centuries of Darmstadt court history. The period rooms can only be seen on a guided tour, which is included in the admission of €6, concessions €3 – pleasant for anyone who would rather listen than read signs. It is only open Fri–Sun 10:00–17:00, with tours starting from 10:00 every 90 minutes (as of Oct. 2026).

Art Nouveau fans head up to the Mathildenhöhe: the Museum Künstlerkolonie (Artists' Colony Museum; Tue–Sun 11:00–18:00, admission €5, concessions €3, free up to age 18, as of Oct. 2026) and next door the anniversary exhibition "A Step Ahead" in the Exhibition Building (until 31 January 2027) are good rainy-day options, although you will walk a short way in the open between the buildings. Route and tickets are in our Art Nouveau guide.

Darmstadt on a rainy day with kids: dragon exhibition, science pop-up and hands-on places

Our studios are designed for a maximum of two people – just right for a mum or dad with a child, a grandma with her granddaughter or a godfather with his godchild. If you are looking for a museum for children in Darmstadt, the special exhibition "Drachen – Mythos und Wirklichkeit" (Dragons – Myth and Reality) at the Landesmuseum is your rainy-day trump card. It shows dragons in European and East Asian art from antiquity to the present and contrasts them with real natural history: fossils millions of years old, animal specimens and rare documents from the history of science. Children follow their own storyline, browse in the reading corner and leave their own dragon on the drawing wall.

  • Dragons at the Landesmuseum: 2 October 2026 to 17 January 2027, admission €12, concessions €8, free up to age 18.

If the questions keep coming afterwards, carry on to the GSI/FAIR Science Pop-up on Ernst-Ludwig-Straße, right in the pedestrian zone. The GSI research centre has set up a hands-on space here: interactive stations on atomic nuclei and particle accelerators, plus occasional STEM workshops for small groups; school classes from year 9 even build a cloud chamber in the student lab. Admission is free, and the space is meant for curious minds aged 5 to 95. Open Tue–Fri 12:00–17:00 and on the Saturdays 24 October, 14 November and 5 December 2026 from 10:30 to 16:00 (as of Oct. 2026). How to visit the real facility is explained in our article Visiting the GSI particle accelerator.

From November, theatre joins the family programme: from 8 November 2026, the Staatstheater (State Theatre) is staging "Ronja Räubertochter" (Ronia, the Robber's Daughter) after Astrid Lindgren in the Kleines Haus, recommended from age 5, tickets €10 to €35. The Zoo Vivarium, on the other hand, is more suited to drizzle and good rain jackets, as you are mostly outdoors there. In October it is open 9:00–18:00, from November to February 9:00–17:00, with the ticket office closing one hour earlier in each case (as of Oct. 2026). For little water babies, there is a Sunday morning play session at the Bezirksbad Bessungen and a sports and play course at the Nordbad at weekends – more on that below.

Wellness instead of weather: the Jugendstilbad with sauna until 22:00

There is hardly a nicer answer to grey days than the Jugendstilbad (Art Nouveau baths) on Mercksplatz. Completed in 1909 as the central baths, thoroughly restored from 2005 to 2008 and awarded the Hessian Monument Protection Prize in 2009, it combines historic halls with a sauna area of nine saunas and steam baths, including a Japanese rose sauna, a Roman-Irish steam bath and an onsen bath. Outside stands the Finnish outdoor sauna at 95 degrees: the rain cools your skin while the steam rises inside – that contrast is what makes the evening. If you prefer swimming, use the large pool or the outdoor pool, which is open all year round.

  • Hours: daily 10:00–22:00, including Sundays and public holidays, swimming until 21:40 (as of Oct. 2026).
  • Prices Mon–Fri / weekend: pool 2 hours €8.50 / €9.50, children €5.90; sauna 3 hours €25.80 / €27.80 (as of Oct. 2026). Small children up to 1 m tall get in free.

With a child you stay in the pool area, which also has a children's paddling pool; for couples and older travellers, the sauna is the highlight. And if you are in town on business, there is no quicker way to clear your head after a long conference day. Afterwards, take tram 3 from "Schloss" back to the Orangerie – and in Studio 1 with its bathtub the wellness evening goes into extra time.

Indoor exercise: climbing, bouldering and indoor pools

If you can't sit still when it rains, head up the walls at the DAV Kletterzentrum Darmstadt (German Alpine Club climbing centre) at the Lichtwiese: rope climbing and bouldering on a total of 2,783 m² (according to familien-willkommen.de). It is open Mon 14:00–23:00, Tue–Fri 10:00–23:00, Sat, Sun and public holidays 9:00–21:00 (as of Oct. 2026). Climbing ends 30 minutes before closing. Visitors pay €18 for a climbing day pass or €11 for bouldering, children aged 5 to 12 €10.50 and €8 respectively; a rental set with harness, shoes, chalk bag and belay device costs €9.

Things are more laid-back at the Boulderhaus Darmstadt on Landwehrstraße: in town since 2015, open daily 9:00–23:00 according to Darmstadt Tourismus (as of Oct. 2026), a meeting point for students and anyone who wants to get going without a climbing partner. Please check prices on the website before your visit.

You can swim right in the neighbourhood: the Bezirksbad Bessungen (district pool) is near the Orangerie garden and has a 25 m sports pool at 27 degrees and a learner pool at 29 degrees. In the winter season it is open to the public Thu–Fri 7:00–22:00, Sat 8:00–19:00 and Sun 8:00–15:00, Mon–Wed only for schools and clubs; on Sundays from 10:30 to 12:30 there is a play morning (as of Oct. 2026). For long lengths, the Nordbad offers a 50 m pool, a diving pool with 1 m and 3 m boards, a paddling pool and, at weekends, a sports and play course (Sat 10:00–16:00, Sun 10:00–12:30); it is open Mon 10:00–21:00, Tue 6:30–21:00, Wed 10:00–22:00, Thu 6:30–21:00, Fri 10:00–21:00, Sat and Sun 8:00–20:00 (as of Oct. 2026). A single adult ticket costs €5 online at both pools.

Cinema, theatre, cabaret: rainy evenings in town

When it gets dark and the streets glisten in the wet, the cosy part begins. The Programmkino Rex arthouse cinema on Wilhelminenstraße shows independent films, on Mondays usually in the original language with subtitles – a plus for international guests. At the same address is the Citydome, with eight screens, current releases, an arthouse focus, film series and opera broadcasts. If you prefer blockbusters, head to the Kinopolis on Goebelstraße.

The Staatstheater Darmstadt stages opera, dance, drama and concerts. According to the programme, autumn 2026 includes the operas "Andrea Chénier" and "Cavalleria rusticana / Pagliacci" as well as the musical "A Chorus Line", which premieres in the Großes Haus on 31 October 2026 (recommended from age 12); you will find the exact dates on the website. All areas are accessible by lift, and all three auditoriums have wheelchair spaces and an induction loop. The advance box office is open Tue–Fri 10:00–18:00 and Sat 10:00–13:00 (as of Oct. 2026).

Something completely different, and right in Bessungen: the Comedy Hall with the Kikeriki Theater. Since 1996 it has staged puppet theatre for adults in the former Bessungen gymnasium; more than 1.45 million people have seen its shows, and there is food and drink too. An evening for couples and groups of friends; programme and prices are on comedyhall.de.

Cosy back at the studio: shopping, cooking, relaxing

Sometimes the way home is the best part of a rainy day. On Fridays, shop at the Bessunger Wochenmarkt (weekly market), held from 14:00 to 18:00 in the car park at the Orangerie (as of Oct. 2026). For shopping in the dry, try the Luisencenter right by the Luisenplatz stop (Mon–Sat 10:00–20:00, as of Oct. 2026). If you want to fill an entire rainy day with browsing, head to LOOP5 in Weiterstadt, Mon–Sat 10:00–20:00 (as of Oct. 2026); the bus leaves from the main station – please check the current timetable in advance. More addresses are in our shopping guide for Darmstadt.

Then it's jacket on the hook, kettle on. Every studio has a kitchenette with hob, pots, pans, oil, salt and pepper, plus a coffee machine with coffee and wine glasses. Pasta for two, a glass of wine at the dining table, and the film you missed at the cinema streaming over the Wi-Fi. Studio 4, with its long kitchenette by the window, large wooden table and smart TV, is made for evenings like this, and thanks to self check-in with an access code you are not tied to any reception hours.

As soon as the sun is back, the rest of the city is waiting outside: our overview of things to do in Darmstadt collects ideas, and how to plan a whole weekend is on our page about a short break in Darmstadt.

On Mondays you still have the Jugendstilbad, the climbing centre (from 14:00), the Boulderhaus, the Nordbad and the subtitled original-language films at the Rex (as of Oct. 2026).
  • Darmstadt Card: the 2-day card for €15 is valid on trams and buses in the extended city area (fare zone 40) and gives discounts at, among others, the Landesmuseum, the Kunsthalle, the palace museum and the Zoo Vivarium – a good match for our two-night minimum stay.
  • From 3 December 2026, the Landesmuseum offers a combined ticket for "Drachen" and "Wildlife Photographer of the Year": €14, concessions €9.
  • Autumn school holidays 5–18 October 2026: tram 3 runs on a special timetable roughly every 10 minutes during the day, while other lines have roadworks and replacement services.
