As of: 2026-10-05 · https://darmstadt-ferienwohnung.de/en/blog/parks-darmstadt

The most beautiful parks in Darmstadt are the Baroque Orangerie garden (Orangeriegarten) in Bessungen, the Herrngarten – the city's largest and oldest park – the Prinz-Georg-Garten and the Rosenhöhe, where more than 10,000 roses bloom from May to November. Add to that the TU's Botanical Garden with free admission, the Bürgerpark Nord for running and skating, and destinations such as the high ropes course, the Steinbrücker Teich pond and Hofgut Oberfeld farm.

For your first taste of the parks, you don't even need to get on the tram: if you're staying in Bessungen, you can take your morning coffee into the Baroque garden, listen to the fountains splashing and be back in time for breakfast. That's exactly where, by the Orangerie, you'll find our [seven studios](https://darmstadt-ferienwohnung.de/en/#studios) – and with your own kitchenette, every park visit becomes a picnic. This guide shows which park suits whom, what it costs and when it's worth going.

## A Baroque garden on your doorstep: the Orangerie garden and Prinz-Emil-Garten in Bessungen
Early in the morning, the **Orangerie garden** belongs to runners, early risers and coffee drinkers on the benches. The layout is strictly symmetrical: wide axes, fountains, tree-lined avenues and three terraced levels. The garden was laid out from 1716 under Landgrave Ernst Ludwig, and the Orangerie building was built in 1719–1721 to plans by Rémy de la Fosse. The garden has been open to the public since 1802, and in June 1870 it hosted Germany's first rose show. In summer, citrus and other exotic fruit trees in large tubs line the paths – Bessungen then feels almost a little Mediterranean.

Couples come for an evening stroll, families for the lawns, runners for a loop across three levels with short climbs. The Orangerie building is now used as an event venue, and the former greenhouse adjoining it to the west houses a restaurant. You can see how close the garden is to the [BSG Living studios](https://darmstadt-ferienwohnung.de/en/#studios) in the list of places below.

A few streets further on is its quieter counterpart: the **Prinz-Emil-Garten**, an English landscape garden laid out in 1775/76 for minister Friedrich Carl von Moser. Instead of symmetry, you'll find two ponds, streams, the Schlösschen (a small manor house, now a neighbourhood centre) and the rebuilt island pavilion. With its playgrounds, it's a good choice for families with young children. Together, the two gardens make a lovely morning loop through Bessungen. Read more about the neighbourhood in our guide [Bessungen and the Orangerie](https://darmstadt-ferienwohnung.de/en/blog/bessungen-orangerie).

## Herrngarten and Prinz-Georg-Garten: picnics and Rococo in the heart of the city
Tram 3 takes you from the Orangerie stop into the city centre without changing. According to the HEAG timetable, it's ten minutes to Luisenplatz; one stop further is Willy-Brandt-Platz by the **Herrngarten**. It's Darmstadt's largest and oldest park: created from kitchen gardens in the 16th century, redesigned as an English-style park from 1766 under Landgravine Karoline and opened to everyone in the early 19th century. The city calls it Darmstadt's living room, and that's exactly how it feels on a warm afternoon. The lawns are covered with picnic blankets, students from the nearby TU read in the shade, children run wild on the two playgrounds, and the city's largest fountain sprays on the pond.

In summer, the Herrngarten café has a beer-garden atmosphere, and the music pavilion hosts promenade concerts. Wander among the trees and you'll come across the tomb of Landgravine Karoline and a Goethe monument.

Right next door is the **Prinz-Georg-Garten** – smaller, quieter and, according to the city, a typical Rococo garden with lawns, flower beds, fountains and sundials. In 1764, Landgrave Ludwig VIII gave the garden to his son Georg Wilhelm, and its basic layout survives to this day. The painted Prettlack'sches Gartenhaus (garden house) contains a free public library: take a book from the shelf, find a bench, afternoon sorted. Admission is free. It's open daily 07:00–19:00 from March to October and daily 08:00–16:00 from November to February (as of Oct. 2026). An audio guide in German and English is available in the Kulturschätze app of the Staatliche Schlösser und Gärten Hessen (Hessian state palaces and gardens).

## Rosenhöhe and the Botanical Garden: what blooms when – and what does it cost?
The **Rosenhöhe** in the east of the city was laid out as a landscape garden in 1817. Its centrepiece is the rose garden (Rosarium), created around 1906, with the Rosendom (rose dome), which was re-erected in 2009. More than 10,000 roses in over 200 species and varieties bloom here from May to November – so an October visit is still worthwhile. Between wide lawns lie the mausoleums of the grand ducal family, and at the entrance stands the Löwentor (Lion Gate), which was moved here from the Mathildenhöhe in 1926. Couples, photographers and anyone who likes to walk slowly will love it here. The nearest stop is Ostbahnhof.

Not far away is the **Botanical Garden of TU Darmstadt**. Founded in 1814, it displays around 8,000 plant species from all climate and vegetation zones across roughly five hectares. Admission is free. The outdoor grounds are open Monday to Friday 07:30–16:00, Saturday 09:00–16:00 and on Sundays and public holidays 09:00–12:00 (as of Oct. 2026). According to the TU, the display greenhouses are closed until further notice – if you're after some tropical air on a rainy day, you'll find alternatives in our guide [Darmstadt on a rainy day](https://darmstadt-ferienwohnung.de/en/blog/darmstadt-rainy-day).

What does a trip into the green cost?

- **Orangerie garden, Prinz-Emil-Garten, Herrngarten, Rosenhöhe, Bürgerpark Nord:** public city parks, free to enter.

- **Prinz-Georg-Garten:** free admission.

- **Botanical Garden:** free admission, greenhouses currently closed.

- **High ropes course (Kletterwald):** €27 for adults, €21 for children aged 6 to 17, €12 in the Räuberlager (kids' area) for four- to six-year-olds, each for 180 minutes including equipment. On Wednesdays, adult students, school pupils and apprentices pay €21 (as of Oct. 2026).

## Parks in Darmstadt for playing and working out: Bürgerpark Nord and Wolfskehl'scher Park
If you're looking to get active, head to the **Bürgerpark Nord**. The park, covering around 100 hectares, was created between 1974 and 1999. In the north there's a landscape park with hills, lakes and meadows; in the middle, a sports zone with a bike park, skate park, athletics stadium and outdoor and indoor pools. From the Watzebuckel, an artificial viewing hill around 22 metres high, you can look out over the whole site. This is the park for teenagers, skaters and anyone who wants to lie on the grass after a workout. You can get there on tram lines 4 and 5 to Nordbad/Eissporthalle.

Right in the middle of Bessungen, on the Galgenberg hill, lies the **Wolfskehl'scher Park**: a terraced park with mature trees. Of the Villa Wolfskehl, built in 1895/96 and destroyed in the Second World War, only the Biedermeier-style tea house survived. At the very top there's a playground, plus the sculpture "Darmstadtia". In winter, the slope down to Karlstraße turns into a toboggan run – a tip for grandparents out with their grandchildren.

For runners: short loops across the Orangerie terraces in the morning; for longer sessions, head out to the Oberfeld fields in the east. According to P-Magazin's running guide, a loop around the fields measures around 6.5 kilometres, but it isn't lit. You'll find more routes and sports options in our guide [Sports in Darmstadt](https://darmstadt-ferienwohnung.de/en/blog/sports-darmstadt).

## Green spaces on the edge of town: Kletterwald Darmstadt, boating at the Steinbrücker Teich, Hofgut Oberfeld
If you want to combine the parks in and around Darmstadt, head out to the edge of town, where meadows give way to forest and fields. The **Kletterwald Darmstadt** (high ropes course) is in the woods right behind the Hochschulstadion (university stadium), reached via Böllenfalltorweg. It offers 19 courses with more than 200 climbing elements, including a partner course, zip lines and the challenging Treeman course. Everyone gets a safety briefing before starting, and there's the Räuberlager for four- to six-year-olds. According to Darmstadt Tourismus, the season runs from March to around November. The course stays closed during storms, so it's best to check days and times online in advance.

A classic Sunday outing takes you to the north-east of the city and the **Steinbrücker Teich** pond. There you can go boating and play mini golf. On Sundays and public holidays, there are pony walks for children aged four and up, no booking required – but only in dry weather. There's also an inclusive playground for children with and without disabilities. At the Café-Restaurant Oberwaldhaus, which has been around since 1901, cake and a beer garden await. Please check the boating season and opening hours before your visit.

**Hofgut Oberfeld** is the last working farm in Darmstadt's core city and is farmed organically. The farm café opens daily from 09:00, on public holidays from 14:00 (as of Oct. 2026), and the farm shop sells cheese, yoghurt, bread, fruit and vegetables – picnic supplies straight from the source. The farm is easy to reach on foot from the Rosenhöhe.

And when it gets dark: the **Volkssternwarte Darmstadt** (public observatory) on the Ludwigshöhe usually opens on Fridays from 19:30. Call ahead, as observations depend on the sky and aren't guaranteed. Take tram 3 from the Orangerie to Lichtenbergschule; from there, according to the observatory, it's around 25 minutes uphill. If you'd rather explore the Ludwigshöhe on foot by day, you'll find routes in our guide [Hiking around Darmstadt](https://darmstadt-ferienwohnung.de/en/blog/hiking-darmstadt).

## Picnic in Darmstadt: what to prepare in your studio and where to take it
The kitchenette in your studio is your picnic base camp. The fridge keeps cheese and drinks cold, the coffee machine, kettle and toaster get you going, and crockery, cutlery and wine glasses are provided. In [Studio 4](https://darmstadt-ferienwohnung.de/en/studio/4), the long kitchenette sits beneath a window – plenty of space and daylight for making sandwiches and slicing fruit.

Shop fresh: on Fridays from 14:00 to 18:00, the **Bessungen farmers' market** sets up in the car park in front of the Orangerie (as of Oct. 2026). On Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 08:00 to 14:00 (as of Oct. 2026), the big weekly market on Marktplatz between the palace and the Old Town Hall is well worth a visit. And at Hofgut Oberfeld you buy directly from the producer.

Three plans for a day outdoors:

- **Bessungen at leisure:** the market on Friday, a blanket on the lawn in the Orangerie garden, and a loop around the ponds in the Prinz-Emil-Garten at sunset.

- **City picnic:** tram 3 to the Herrngarten, a spot with a view of the fountain, then into the Prinz-Georg-Garten with a book.

- **Roses and fields:** the rose garden in the morning, on to the farm café at Hofgut Oberfeld for lunch, feet up in your studio in the evening.

Two nights are ideal for a programme like this – and that's exactly our minimum stay. You'll find ideas for the rest of your time on our page about a [short break in Darmstadt](https://darmstadt-ferienwohnung.de/en/short-break-darmstadt).
