# Hiking in Darmstadt: Odenwald, Felsenmeer and Burg Frankenstein – back to your studio in town each evening

> Hiking around Darmstadt without a car: a mini-hike up the Ludwigshöhe from Bessungen, 10 km over the Darmstadt hills, plus Burg Frankenstein, the Felsenmeer, the Melibokus and the Burgensteig trail by tram and train – and back to your studio in the evening.

As of: 2026-10-05 · https://darmstadt-ferienwohnung.de/en/blog/hiking-darmstadt

Hiking in Darmstadt takes you straight from the city into the forest: from Bessungen, paths climb up to the Ludwigshöhe with its Ludwigsturm lookout tower and across the Darmstadt hills to the Goethefelsen (Goethe’s Rock). Burg Frankenstein (Frankenstein Castle), the Felsenmeer (“sea of rocks”) in the Odenwald, the Melibokus and the Burgensteig trail along the Bergstraße are all so close that you can reach them by tram, train and bus – no car needed.

This guide sorts the walks by effort: from a morning stroll with a view to a castle stage with a regional train ride back. The idea is simple: Odenwald and Bergstraße by day, city by night. Our [seven studios by the Orangerie](https://darmstadt-ferienwohnung.de/en/#studios) make a base camp with kitchenette and self check-in – hiking in and around Darmstadt without packing your bags every evening.

## Hiking from your doorstep: Ludwigshöhe, Goethefelsen and the Darmstadt hills
Darmstadt was once called the “city in the woods”, and to this day half the city’s area is forest. In Bessungen you notice it after just a few streets: the houses thin out, the path starts to climb and the air smells of leaves and resin. Your first goal is the **Ludwigshöhe**, Bessungen’s “home hill” at 246 metres. On top stands the **Ludwigsturm**, opened in 1882 and about 28 metres tall; after restoration the city reopened it in June 2024. On a clear day, according to Darmstadt Marketing, the view stretches across the Rhine plain to the Palatinate Forest, the Taunus hills and the Frankfurt skyline.

We could not find officially published fixed opening hours for the tower. Volunteers from the Bürgeraktion Bessungen-Ludwigshöhe (a local citizens’ association) unlock it on selected days, most recently on 3 and 4 October 2026 from 12:00 to 17:00 – please check dates before you go. According to Darmstadt Tourismus, the Ludwigsklause country inn opens Wednesday to Sunday from 12:00 to 18:00 – that information is undated, so check beforehand as well. Families can add the **Planetenweg** (planet trail): starting at the public observatory, it leads 2.8 kilometres through a solar system on a 1 : 1 billion scale. To shorten the climb, take tram 3 or 7 to the terminus Lichtenbergschule.

### Half-day loop “Über die Darmstädter Hügel” (10 km)
For more distance, try this walking tip from the Geo-Naturpark Bergstraße-Odenwald: 10 kilometres, around three hours, starting at the Böllenfalltor car park. Via the Herrgottsberg you reach the **Goethefelsen** at the Goetheteich pond, where a bronze plaque recalls that Goethe wrote his poem “Felsweihegesang an Psyche” here in May 1772. Following the route of the Internationaler Waldkunstpfad (International Forest Art Trail), you climb to the Ludwigshöhe; since 2002 this art biennial has brought installations into the forest for a few weeks every two years, and the 2026 edition ended on 4 October. From there you walk down to the Marienhöhe with its newly built Marientempel. Through the Hetterbach valley you reach the Prinzenberg, the largest continuous area of traditional orchard meadows on the Hessian Bergstraße, with views across the Rhine plain. The finale is the **Dommersberg**, at 264 metres Darmstadt’s highest hill. The 26-metre Bismarckturm, built by students between 1904 and 1908, can only be admired from outside.

Prefer hopping from hill to hill through the city? The **7-Hügel-Steig** (Seven Hills Trail) starts at the Ostbahnhof, is 13 kilometres long with only gentle climbs and also crosses the Mathildenhöhe. For quiet green spots to take a break, see our guide to [parks in Darmstadt](https://darmstadt-ferienwohnung.de/en/blog/parks-darmstadt).

## Burg Frankenstein: myth, views and the climb from Eberstadt
No hiking destination around Darmstadt tells a better story. **Burg Frankenstein** sits enthroned at around 370 metres above Eberstadt, on a spur of the Langenberg in the Odenwald; it was probably built around 1240 and is first documented in 1252. Whether Mary Shelley ever came here and named her novel after the castle is disputed – but the myth comes along on the walk anyway. When the castle tower is accessible, you look out over the Rhine plain and Darmstadt; next to it stands a 15th-century chapel. Admission is free according to the Geo-Naturpark, and there is a kiosk on site. A small experiment for children: the **magnetic stones** on the nearby Magnetberg, the Ilbes-Berg, are naturally magnetic – a compass makes it visible.

The climb begins in the city. According to OpenStreetMap, tram 7 runs without changing from the Orangerie stop to Eberstadt Friedhof; according to the Burgensteig operator, lines 1 and 8 stop there too. This is where the Burgensteig starts: follow the blue castle on a white background over a bridge into the forest and up to the castle. At the top, though, not everything is as it used to be. In April 2024 the Burgensteig operator reported that the castle is being renovated and cannot be visited directly until further notice; the regional tourism portal speaks of temporary closures of individual areas. The castle restaurant has been closed since October 2023, and the well-known Halloween festival has moved to Burg Königstein. Please check the current situation before you go. More ideas for a day out in the countryside are in our [day trips from Darmstadt](https://darmstadt-ferienwohnung.de/en/blog/day-trips-from-darmstadt).

## Felsenmeer in the Odenwald: rock scrambling for all ages – by bus and train
Picture a river of stone: at the **Felsenmeer** near Lautertal-Reichenbach, huge boulders stream around one kilometre down the slopes of the Felsberg. Children hop from block to block, adults look for traces of the Romans, who ran a quarry here – the “Riesensäule” (giant column) still lies on the hillside. The Felsenmeer is part of the UNESCO Global Geopark Bergstraße-Odenwald, is freely accessible at any time and dog-friendly. Bring shoes with a good tread; on the boulders every step counts.

The **information centre** at the foot of the Felsenmeer has these autumn opening hours (as of October 2026): 5 to 17 October Wednesday to Sunday 10:00–17:00, 18 to 30 October Wednesday to Friday 11:00–16:00 and at weekends 10:00–17:00, 31 October to 30 November Saturdays and Sundays only, 11:00–16:00. Without a car, take the train from Darmstadt Hauptbahnhof to Bensheim (around 15 to 25 minutes according to the RMV timetable), then bus 665 to Reichenbach Markt and walk about 15 minutes. Alternatively, bus MO2 from Reinheim stops right at the Felsenmeer. By car, parking costs 5 euros per day. On the summit of the Felsberg (514 m) stands the Ohlyturm tower from 1901; please check before you go whether it is open to climb.

## Melibokus and Auerbacher Schloss: summits and castles on the Bergstraße
At 517 metres, the **Melibokus** is the most striking and highest mountain on the Hessian Bergstraße. On the summit stands a 22-metre lookout tower, rebuilt in 1966. Tower and inn open on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 11:00 (as of October 2026) – if you want the panoramic view over the Rhine plain, plan the hike for the weekend. The most direct paths start in Zwingenberg; the train from Darmstadt Hauptbahnhof takes about 11 to 17 minutes according to the RMV timetable.

A few kilometres to the south, the **Auerbacher Schloss** (Auerbach Castle) towers above Bensheim-Auerbach. The Counts of Katzenelnbogen probably began building the castle from 1222, and it is first documented in 1247; towers, walls and courtyard still show how large the complex once was. The ruin is open daily from 11:00 to 17:00, the Burgschenke tavern on Mondays and Wednesday to Friday from 10:00 to 17:00, closed on Tuesdays (as of October 2026). In autumn the operator hosts knights’ banquets, for example on 18 and 25 October for families and on 31 October 2026 for Halloween. You return from Bensheim-Auerbach station on the Main-Neckar railway line.

## Burgensteig Bergstraße: stages as day hikes from a base in Darmstadt
The **Burgensteig Bergstraße** (Bergstraße Castle Trail) links Darmstadt-Eberstadt with Heidelberg over around 120 kilometres, in nine stages and past many castles and palaces. The German Hiking Association regularly certifies it as a quality hiking trail, and more than 60 signboards show the way. The operator rates the full route as difficult: fitness and sure-footedness are required. The clever part for guests without a car: instead of moving from one place to the next, you travel to the start of a stage in the morning and back to the same studio in the evening – a series of day hikes with a light daypack.

- **Stage 1 (around 13 km, moderate):** from the Eberstadt Friedhof stop via Burg Frankenstein, the Karlshöhe and the Tannenberg ruin to the Heiligenberg with its monastery ruin, mausoleum and golden cross. The finish is the Ludwigstraße stop in Jugenheim, from where tram 8 runs to Darmstadt.

- **Stage 2 (around 12 km, moderate):** from Jugenheim to the Alsbacher Schloss, along the mid-slopes of the Melibokus above Zwingenberg and on to the Auerbacher Schloss. From Bensheim-Auerbach the RB 68 regional train runs, which according to the timetable also stops at Darmstadt Süd.

- **Stages 3 to 9:** via Heppenheim, Weinheim and Schriesheim to Heidelberg. According to the operator, trains and buses connect the towns along the Bergstraße at frequent intervals.

If your calves demand a rest day, trade altitude for wide open spaces: the **Kühkopf-Knoblochsaue** nature reserve on the Rhine is, at 2,370 hectares, the largest in Hesse and a European reserve. It is best reached by bike – routes are in our article on [cycling from Darmstadt](https://darmstadt-ferienwohnung.de/en/blog/cycling-darmstadt).

## Why stay close to town? Sauna, restaurants and a kitchenette in the evening instead of a guesthouse
Anyone looking for accommodation in the Odenwald usually thinks of a guesthouse in the countryside. The alternative: you sleep in the city and still have the forest on your doorstep. After your hike you check in via self check-in, with no reception hours to worry about. [Studio 6](https://darmstadt-ferienwohnung.de/en/studio/6) has a rain shower, and Studios 1, 2 and 5 have a bathtub for tired calves. In [Studio 4](https://darmstadt-ferienwohnung.de/en/studio/4) the long kitchenette runs along the window; in the evening you spread out the hiking map on the large wooden table and pack provisions for the next day.

Or you head out once more. The **Jugendstilbad** (Art Nouveau baths) is open daily from 10:00 to 22:00; three hours of sauna cost 25.80 euros on weekdays and 27.80 euros at weekends (as of October 2026). For dinner, Darmstadt has plenty to offer, from bistros to Michelin-starred restaurants – our pick is in the [Michelin guide to Darmstadt](https://darmstadt-ferienwohnung.de/en/blog/michelin-restaurants-darmstadt). And if you spend the day in the eastern Odenwald, stop at the **Gaststube** in Haus Krone in Höchst im Odenwald: the Michelin Guide 2026 awards it a Bib Gourmand for its regional cooking. Please check opening hours directly with the restaurant.

Because the studios can be booked from two nights, the concept suits a hiking weekend: Ludwigshöhe and the Darmstadt hills on day one, Frankenstein or the Felsenmeer on day two. More ideas are collected on our page about a [short break in Darmstadt](https://darmstadt-ferienwohnung.de/en/short-break-darmstadt).
