As of: 2026-10-04 · https://darmstadt-ferienwohnung.de/en/blog/day-trips-from-darmstadt

The best day trips from Darmstadt are close enough to do without a car: according to bahn.de, Frankfurt is just 16 minutes away at best and Heidelberg 36 minutes, while regional trains run direct to Mainz and to the wine villages of the Bergstraße (the "mountain road" along the edge of the Odenwald hills). Add to that two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Lorsch Abbey (Kloster Lorsch) and the Messel Pit (Grube Messel), plus the Felsenmeer ("sea of rocks") in the Odenwald and the largest nature reserve in Hesse on the Rhine.

The idea is simple: head out in the morning, come back in the evening. Instead of packing your bags every day, you stay in one of our [seven studios by the Orangerie in Darmstadt-Bessungen](https://darmstadt-ferienwohnung.de/en/#studios). The kitchenette is there for breakfast before the train, the Wi-Fi for planning your route, and thanks to self check-in it doesn't matter if your day in Heidelberg runs late. This guide to day trips around Darmstadt sorts destinations by city, wine and nature and shows you which ticket is worth buying.

## Day trips around Darmstadt: why the city is the ideal base
For a day trip from Darmstadt, trains run in three directions: north towards Frankfurt, west to Mainz on the Rhine, and south along the Bergstraße to Heidelberg. From the studio, according to the HEAG mobilo timetable, tram 3 takes you from the **Orangerie** stop to the main station in 18 to 19 minutes without changing. If you are heading for the Bergstraße or Heidelberg, you can also board at **Darmstadt Süd**, where the RB 68 regional train stops.

In the evening you return to quiet Bessungen, the [Orangerie garden](https://darmstadt-ferienwohnung.de/en/blog/bessungen-orangerie) is right next door, and in your own kitchen a bottle of Bergstraße wine turns into dinner for two.

### Seasonal calendar: when each destination is at its best

- **Spring:** almond blossom on the Bergstraße, according to Wikipedia as early as March, plus walks in the Staatspark Fürstenlager.

- **Early summer:** the Bergsträßer Weinmarkt wine fair in Heppenheim, usually from late June to early July.

- **Late summer:** the Bergsträßer Winzerfest wine festival in Bensheim, usually for nine days in early September.

- **Autumn:** hiking between the Felsenmeer, Melibokus and Burg Frankenstein; the Messel Pit is open daily until 15 November.

- **Winter:** city days in Heidelberg, Frankfurt and Mainz; the Messel Pit is then open Wednesday to Sunday.

## Heidelberg in a day: train, old town and back for dinner
Red sandstone walls above the Neckar, narrow lanes, evening light on the river: Heidelberg is the classic day trip, and you are still back in Darmstadt by evening. According to bahn.de, the train from Darmstadt to Heidelberg takes 36 minutes at best, with up to 40 direct connections a day. The **RB 68** regional train takes just over an hour, runs without changing and can be used with the Deutschlandticket. Check your connection shortly beforehand, as the timetable changes in December.

Above the old town towers **Heidelberg Castle** (Heidelberger Schloss), one of Germany's most famous ruins, built from red Neckar valley sandstone. It was destroyed in the Nine Years' War (War of the Palatinate Succession), in 1764 a lightning strike set further parts on fire, and the Romantics turned the ruin into a place of longing. Down by the river, the **Alte Brücke** (Old Bridge), built of red sandstone in 1788 under Elector Karl Theodor, links the old town with the Neuenheim bank. Stay on the bridge until late afternoon, then take the train back and cook some pasta in the kitchenette of your [studio](https://darmstadt-ferienwohnung.de/en/studio/1).

You can also make it a sporty day: the "Die Bergstraße" cycle route runs around 84 kilometres from Darmstadt to the Alte Brücke, and you return on the RB 68. Route, taking bikes on trains and stages are covered in our [cycling tours from Darmstadt](https://darmstadt-ferienwohnung.de/en/blog/cycling-darmstadt).

## Frankfurt and Mainz: big city, the Rhine and a cathedral by regional train
The train from Darmstadt to **Frankfurt** is the quickest trip: according to bahn.de, the shortest connection takes 16 minutes, and up to 71 direct connections run daily, ICE and regional trains combined. According to the RMV timetable, the RE 60 and RB 68 regional trains take around 20 minutes. In the old town, the **Römerberg** awaits – the heart of the city since the High Middle Ages – with the "Römer" city hall and the half-timbered houses of the Ostzeile, rebuilt in the early 1980s. Then take a stroll along the Main, and in the evening swap the skyline for the calm of Bessungen.

The train from Darmstadt to **Mainz** runs on the Rhein-Main-Bahn line with the RB 75 regional train. According to a timetable sample from October 2026, direct services to Mainz Hbf take just over half an hour; some trains terminate in Mainz-Bischofsheim, where you change. With the Deutschlandticket this makes a relaxed half-day trip. The centrepiece of the old town is **Mainz Cathedral** (Mainzer Dom) of St Martin, a Romanesque imperial cathedral with Gothic and Baroque additions. While its new building is under construction, the Gutenberg Museum is showing the interim exhibition "MOVED"; please check the current status before visiting. Round off the day with a walk along the Rhine and a glass of wine in the old town.

## The Bergstraße: wine, castles and blossom where spring arrives first
Emperor Joseph II is said to have exclaimed on the Bergstraße: "This is where Germany begins to become Italy." According to Wikipedia, the region has the earliest start of spring in Germany, with its almond trees blossoming as early as March. Exactly when everything turns pink depends on the weather.

At around 463 hectares, the **Hessische Bergstraße** wine region is one of the smallest in Germany. Try the **Roter Riesling** (Red Riesling): this historic grape variety has red skins but makes white wine, and according to the regional tourism portal it copes better with heat than classic Riesling. According to the RMV timetable, the train from Darmstadt Hbf takes about 15 to 25 minutes to Bensheim. Two festivals define the wine summer: the **Bergsträßer Weinmarkt** in Heppenheim, ten days from late June to early July, and the **Bergsträßer Winzerfest** in Bensheim. It begins every year on the Saturday before the first Sunday in September, lasts nine days and draws over 100,000 visitors. Please check the exact dates with the organiser before booking.

In the **Staatspark Fürstenlager** in Bensheim-Auerbach, the House of Hesse-Darmstadt spent its summers in the late 18th century. Today the landscape park, with its little village, old spa fountain and vineyard slopes, is freely accessible, and according to Wikipedia it is home to one of the oldest giant sequoias in Germany. Above Auerbach also towers the **Auerbacher Schloss**, a castle ruin open daily from 11:00 to 17:00 (as of Oct. 2026). Further north rises the **Melibokus**, at 517 metres the highest peak of the Hessian Bergstraße. The observation tower and restaurant are open on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 11:00 (as of Oct. 2026). The starting point is Zwingenberg, 11 to 17 minutes from Darmstadt Hbf according to the RMV timetable.

For culture, head a little further into the Rhine plain: **Lorsch Abbey** (Kloster Lorsch) has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991, and its Königshalle (King's Hall) is one of the few completely preserved buildings from the Carolingian era. The abbey grounds with their herb garden are freely accessible all year round until dusk, and the museum centre is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00. From March to October, public guided tours Tuesday to Sunday at 13:00 and 15:00 also take you to the upper floor of the Königshalle (as of Oct. 2026). According to the abbey, it is about a ten-minute walk from Lorsch station; the journey planner will show you the connection from Darmstadt.

## Nature trips near Darmstadt: the Felsenmeer, the Messel Pit and the Kühkopf
In the **Felsenmeer** near Lautertal-Reichenbach, huge boulders stretch for around a kilometre down the Felsberg hill. Children jump from rock to rock, while adults look for traces of a Roman quarry. The Felsenmeer is part of the UNESCO Global Geopark Bergstraße-Odenwald and is freely accessible at any time. In October the information centre is open Wednesday to Sunday, and from 31 October only at weekends from 11:00 to 16:00 (as of Oct. 2026). Without a car, take the train to Bensheim, bus 665 to Reichenbach Markt, and walk about 15 minutes.

Closer by is **Burg Frankenstein** (Frankenstein Castle) above Eberstadt, first mentioned in 1252. Whether it gave Mary Shelley's novel its name is disputed – the view over the Rhine plain is not. The castle restaurant has been closed since October 2023, so please check access before your visit. The climb and trails are described in our guide [Hiking around Darmstadt](https://darmstadt-ferienwohnung.de/en/blog/hiking-darmstadt).

The **Messel Pit** (Grube Messel) has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995, Germany's first natural World Heritage Site. Fossils around 47 to 48 million years old were found here, the most famous being the terrier-sized early horse. From 15 March to 15 November it is open daily from 10:00 to 17:00, and after that Wednesday to Sunday (as of Oct. 2026). With the Darmstadt Card you get two admissions for the price of one. Tours, prices and how to get there by tram 3 and bus FM are in our guide to the [Messel Pit](https://darmstadt-ferienwohnung.de/en/blog/messel-pit).

It gets completely flat on the Rhine: the **Kühkopf-Knoblochsaue** nature reserve was established in 1952 and, at 2,370 hectares, is the largest in Hesse – and a European reserve as well. The Rhine island is closed to cars, so you explore the floodplain landscape on foot or by bike. Take the train to Stockstadt am Rhein on the Frankfurt–Mannheim line; according to the environmental education centre, it is a 15- to 20-minute walk from the station to Hofgut Guntershausen.

## Which ticket for day trips? Deutschlandticket and RMV day ticket
The **Deutschlandticket** costs €63 a month in 2026 and, according to the VDV, €66.80 from 1 January 2027. It is valid on regional trains, S-Bahn services, trams and buses, but not on ICE and IC trains. It gets you to every destination in this guide, for example on the RB 68 to Heidelberg and the RB 75 to Mainz.

Without a Deutschlandticket, the **RMV day ticket** already pays off from the second journey, according to RMV. For two people, the group day ticket for up to five people is cheaper than two day tickets, according to the RMV price list. The RMVgo app shows the fare for your route. Heidelberg belongs to the Rhein-Neckar transport association (VRN), and the fare systems overlap in the Bergstraße district. For days in the city there is the **Darmstadt Card**: €10 for one day, €15 for two (as of Oct. 2026), including buses and trams in the extended city area and discounts at museums.

Our advice: plan at least two nights, one day for Darmstadt and one for the excursion. Prepare your picnic the evening before in the kitchenette of your [studio by the Orangerie](https://darmstadt-ferienwohnung.de/en/#studios) and look up tomorrow's connection at the desk. How to get to Darmstadt in the first place is covered in our guide [Getting to Darmstadt](https://darmstadt-ferienwohnung.de/en/blog/getting-to-darmstadt), and everything about a studio for a few days is on our [short break in Darmstadt](https://darmstadt-ferienwohnung.de/en/short-break-darmstadt) page.
